Questions about Benro Tripod

I have taken delivery of a Benro C297 tripod and a J series Balhead II. So far I am pretty impressed and the build quality is very good. The instructions, however, leave a lot to be desired!

I can't work out what the point of the "Friction Screw (D)" is (the little silver screw). Apparently it "increases the friction of the ball". What is the difference between that and what the standard "ball locking knob (C)"?

The other thing I'm surprised at is that the Manfrotto carbon fibre column I bought doesn't seem to fit the Benro tripod. The benro column is circular whereas the Manfrotto has flattened sides.

I ordered a Manfrotto junior geared head as well and wanted a second column for quick changes.

The friction screw will increase or decrease the pressure on the ball head when it is not locked off.

Reduce the friction if you want it to be loose or tighten it up to make to stiffer to move when the camera and stuff is attached to ball head.

Glad you are happy with the J-2 and tripod Pete, they are good quality. The extra bit on the strap is I believe so you can loop it around the lower legs if you do not carry it in the bag. I think that makes sense.

I guess you can send the centre column back, DC also sells centre columns, long or short for the Benro.

Paul.
