Questions regarding AEB & HDR

Hello, hope everyone is all good this friday :)

Just a quick couple of questions regarding AEB shooting, hope this is the right section - I thought there was a technique one but couldn't find it.

Never used AEB but would like to start, I know the concept is to take multiple images over and under exposed to them produce an HDR image later on, my questions are;

- How do I set the number of images taken, i.e say I want 3 under and 3 over?

- Is there anyway to set this via a timer to then run in sequence, i.e press shutter once, wait 2 seconds and then the camera fires off all the shots one after another without me having to re-press the shutter?

I have a Canon 40D.

You can set the AEB feature from the menu. 2 additional markers appear on your meter to show you how many stops each side you are bracketing. I think you can only do 3 shots on the 40D.

Haven't got my camera with me but I'm sure someone can explain how to do this. It's in the manual too.

If you use a 2 second timer it should take all 3 shots after 2 seconds delay, as you suggest. I like to use mirror lock up or live-view, or the mirror will flip 3 times.

Ok thanks, I know how to do it but thought maybe I could do more than 3 shots. :(

Will check the link out - many thanks.

Looks like we're limited to 3. But the link tells you how to pull it off. Might be worth experimenting.

Not sure about shooting at f32 though like it suggests! Seems a bit high. But if you're shooting directly at the sun perhaps it's the only way to keep a low enough shutter speed.

I didn't even know it went past F22! I always thought that was the limit of most lenses.

Shame about the 3 shot thing. What about if I just shoot in manual mode and change the shutter speed to reflect the exposure change I want?

Yeah nothing wrong with doing that, you could take as many bracketed shots as you like then. From 1/8000 to 30 seconds and beyond!

Only issue might be ensuring the camera doesn't move while you turn the wheel. But it should be OK if you're careful?

If you shoot manual you can have as many exposures as you like, it's only on the AEB setting your limited to 3 on canon, nikon have more. You can use the self timer with AEB, it'll take the 3 shots and stop.

Thanks guys, as always very helpful and very quick! Great forum :)
