Friend of mine has a 450d, and she didn't even realise it has Live View. I've activated it in the menu but can you auto-focus at all with the 450d and if so what button focuses?

You use the asterisk (AE lock) button to focus. There are 2 ways of focussing, one using the sensor, which is quite slow, and one using the quick mode whereby the mirror is flicked down and back up, using the normal focus point.
You choose the method in the custom functions no. 8-1.
