Just thought i'd share this quick non scientific test!

A few weeks ago I was deciding between a 2nd hand Canon f4 70-200 L or a Sigma f2.8 70-200 EX Mk1. They are both around the same price 2nd hand and i'd read that the Sigma EX's are supposed to be as good quality as the L's

I bought the Sigma and once i worked out how to use a 2.8 zoom properly I was getting some very sharp shots and I was very happy.

Anyway a friend of mine the other day bought a F4 L, so thought to compare we'd go out and do a couple of test shots.

this is just one of them, both len's were at f5.6 at about 200mm about the same shutter speeds as well

Straight out of the camera's , no processing at all, just enlarged to a 100% crop in bridge

One shot was taken with a 20D with the Sigma F2.8, the other one was with a 7D and the Canon f4 L

The white balance is different as the 20d was on auto, the 7d on cloudy.

I dont think there's much in it, and im very pleased with my used sigma compared to a new L, but care to guess which ones which?

Thanks

I think the only way you could have a good comparison is if both lenses were used on the same camera with the same settings. There are too many variables - shutter speeds "about the same" and comparing a 7D and 20D?

Nice shot though all the same.

sure, not a true test, i did say it was a quick non scientific test

I'd say the left shot was taken with the Sigma...

 Well done you win a teddy bear

The left shot was the 2.8 Sigma on a 20D , the right shot the Canon f4 L on a 7D, both taken at f5.6

Ok it's not a very accurate test, but I was plesantly suprised at how good the Sigma is in this case compared to the L :)

They're different lenses. The real comparison is between a canon 2.8 and the sigma 2.8 wide open. :)

agreed, i looked at is as a what can you get for your money comparison between the two, sigma 2.8 and canon f4's are around £550-£600 new

the canon 2.8 at £1100+ better take a better image!

Now put the Canon f4 on the 20d and you'll find that, magically, it's now the canon that looks better at 100%, the high pixel density on the 7D is much less forgiving than the 20D's sensor which has less than half the pixels in the same area.

I must admit, I was thinking the same........

Same here. There is little difference between the shots sharpness wise but the 7D has almost twice the pixels of the 20D. There's actually quite a big difference there.

EDIT: And no it's not owner bias, I completely forgot I even owned one until I saw my post and sig...:cuckoo: (Haven't had it very long)

Some lenses are underrated - here I loanded a Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 when the IS falied on the 2.8IS.

Sigma taken at 200mm wide open at f/2.8....

Erm, I've ruined the links so I give up.

Now to me that looks 100% sharp from centre to corner, especially for a zoom at 200mm f/2.8, perhaps it's just me?

Have to say I am very happy with my Canon 70-200 F4. I've had a couple of Sigmas, all on the soft side, although I havn't used a Siggi 70-200. Cannon all the way for me.

Purely my opinion but the two you've tried are both better than the canon F2.8 ;)
