Quick Control Screen on 50D

I have just been looking through the manual (as one does occasionally!) and found this quick control screen.

Well to all intents and purposes it looks just like the screen I have set to come on when Im in shooting mode and press the info button...ie; all the settings come up in big text on the back and you can change them from there.

The only difference is, when in AV mode in the quick control screen it only shows the aperture and not what the corresponding shutterspeed is doing while I am changing the aperture. This seems a bit counterproductive to me, whereas as soon as I touch my shutter button, the normal large "info" screen comes up and it has the shutter info on.. but maybe not a couple of other things from the quick control screen.

Am I doing something wrong here or are others happy that there is no shutterspeed showing?

To be honest I probably wont use it.. but just wanted to know!!

I believe when you are in Av Mode, the corresponding shutter speed will only display once you have half pressed the shutter, as the camera needs to meter to conditions based up the settings you have inputted.

The Av Mode is designed for you to be able to select an Aperture you require whilst the camera works out the shutter for you.

thanks Jamie. what happens though is that as you press the shutter.. hte quick control screen disappears and the normal info screen appears..so it isnt the q c screen i am looking at any more. :shrug:
 
Unfortunately I can't help you much further with that one I'm affraid :(
I have a 5D MKI so it doesn't even display anything on the back screen, it's all on the top and through the viewfinder.

I hope you find some usefull information from here with someone who has the camera :)

Just tried that. not working, but just remembered I set the joystick to select focus points so is there another way of getting it

ihave changed the setting of it in my custom functions so i press the set button and the quick control screen comes up.

i rather like the screen as it is easy to change settings without having to look over the top of the camera to press the iso button, white balance button etc etc

just like to know why we cant see the shutter chosen and then when we press the shutter half way down the normal large info screen comes back instead.

If I've got it right (and that's doubtful) the quick set up screen does just that, allows you to set stuff up. So if you're in AV you can change the f-stop and if you're in TV you can set the shutter speed. I think the clue is in the name of the application. :bonk:
 
You're right but if you want to check the shutter speed you have to press the shutter button.. then you have to press the set button again to go back into the quick control screen to change other bits. all in all i think it defeats it being QUICK!!!

You're right of course :(

It's utter carp :shrug:

Perhaps they should rename it the "quick settings view for the mode you're currntly in screen"
 
Ok found the quick control screen setting. I kept missing it because you need to scroll down to see it. Duh!!
So I have assigned the QCS to the set button, BUT. my camera is broken 'cos I dont seem to have a "Set Button"
 
Edit. just had a quick check of brain....no nothing there but I have got a set button after all. slinks off into the distance with a red face
 
prob my fault as i dont even have the camera in the room!!!

isnt the set button in the middle of the rear wheel?
 
does the quick control screen not come up if the info button is pressed twice and then stay on until it is pressed again ?
 
No thats the info screen. the quick control screen has turquoise on it.. thats the main way to tell the difference.

but in the shooting info screen you mentioned you have to still press the little buttons on top of the camera to change iso, focus, drive etc etc

the quick control screen does those from teh rear display.

I jsut cant work out how to see the shutter it has selected at your chosen aperture (AV mode) it might select 1/4 which is way too slow.. and the only way to seee is to half press shutter button .. then the screen goes away from quick control and back to the shooting info screen that you mentioned.
 
The camera only selects the "other setting" after you half press the shutter. If you set it to "Tv" the quick screen shows shutter speed but not aperture until you half press the shutter. I think we have to decide which is more important to us, shutterr speed or aperture and use Tv or Av accordingly. I know that's not what you were after and I agree it would be better if after a half press on the shutter it went back to quick screen, but it doesn't.
