Quick filters question

Looking at getting a circular polarizing filter and a few others. I mainly shoot cars so what would benefit me most?

Also is there anything I can do to use the filters on all or most of my lenses instead of just one?

Lastly what filter would you recommend, no budget but would prefer to only spend a max of around £30.

i would say a polariser would be your best bet for cars as u can remove reflections and also make colours more vivid.
square filters are a good way to go if u want to use them on lenses with different filter ring sizes as u can just buy different size rings. this will be a cheaper option, but £30 might be a bit of a tight budget!
 
Would there be any reason not to do this? I don't understand why everyone doesn't do it :S
 
im not really sure, i think some of the filters that fit the square holders can be very expensive, for example i bought a 77mm polarizer for £40 and to get the equivilent for the square filter holder it would have cost nearer £200. i mainly have the square holder for use with nd filters! if your filter rings are all the same size id go for the screw type for the polarizer. if u are planning to use nd grad filters definately go for square filters!

that example was for a wide angle lens so prob worst case scenario!

but anyway there are plenty of brands out there lee, cokin, b+w, hoya etc

my best advice is read up on what each type does and make your decision based on what u find out. u can soon spend lots of money on things like filters so worth getting it right first time!
 
Your best bet would be to buy a polariser that is bigger than your biggest lens thread and then use stepping rings to make it fit all your lenses. That's will cost more than £30 though. Most decent big polarises are £60 upwards.

thats a good point hadnt thought of that, may be a better way to go!
still not cheap tho.
 
Photography rarely is cheap I'm afraid. My lee filter holder alone cost £50 and is only a bit of plastic.

Great advice, I went the lee route as well, not cheap but an excellent route, my polariser for the lee set iirc was about £250 but I will never need to buy another one
 
Can anyone point me in the right direction with links?

So everyone advises to go for my biggest diameter and then get reducers basically?
