Are dslr's allowed in the sea life centre? Don't want to carry it all the way there from the hotel if they don't! Limited Internet so can't check their site easily.

 Phone them

I have taken them on several occasions - but you might be restricted on how much you can use the flash!

Don't use flash so no issue there. Thanks!

I don't do phones!!

I've had a look around there website and cannot see anything to prohibit photography, I have sent them a quick email to ask if they have a photographic policy if and when I get a response I'll let you know

I haven't been for a while, but I remember the lighting as being very subdued.

It's extremely dark in there, and the fish are moving, so don't expect too many good pictures.

Been and took loads of photos. Quite a few keepers from the looks of it on the LCD.
Iso 6400, f/4 + VR. Jobs a goodun. A woman asked me to set up her little point and shoot, that wasn't so successful!

I never go by the LCD, and I'm fairly picky as to which ones I keep. I too was shooting at ISO6400 and f2.8 mostly. As you say, you do need decent kit in those conditions!

It's an interesting place, I thought the building itself was fascinating. Our visit was slightly marred by large groups of overseas students on outings who were running around in packs - not pleasant given how pitch black it is in places, I think I came away with a few bruises. It's always quite busy, but there's definitely an argument for going in the winter months.

I don't have a pc with me so can't do anything but go by the LCD. I'll find out when I get round to processing them. I'm not thar fussed if they don't come out, I'm not really a fishy person. It wasn't too busy. We first went but the queue was up the steps and out down the road with Japanese tourists, so we walked off down the sea front and got the train back. By this time the queue had gone completely. interesting place and better than a lot of reviews I read made it out to be. Hellishly expensive though.

I was there a week or so ago, I was thankful I had the 7D on me with it's ability to go to quite high ISO. I didn't go above 3200 though, just as damage limitation as far as noise is concerned!

Got a few good pics with the 50mm f1.8, but struggled at ISO 3200 with the tamron 17-50 f2.8.

As for photography rules, me and the could-have-been-the-girlfriend-if-she-didn't-end-it-last-week just turned up on the day with our SLRs slung over our shoulders :) Nobody batted an eyelid, they just let us get on with it.

Hellishly expensive though.

Tell me about it. Still, the upkeep on that place is unreal, so I didn't begrudge it too much. And I got to feed Lulu the giant Sea Turtle.

Edit: Chris, I agree about the staff, they're great. They were amused by my fervent picture-taking and seemed to realise how difficult it is to get decent shots. When I got home I binned most of my shots, and fell about laughing at the rest ...

Just a quick update:

I know this of no use to the OP, but you never know it may come up in a search, I have just had an email from the manager at Brighton sea life centre and cameras/photographers are welcome at the centre, flash photography is not permitted and no commercial use, I have to add I have always wondered how non-commercial is enforced by organisations like this??

Hope this helps someone in the future ;)

They are part of the Merlin group so you can get an annual pass for about £60 in tesco vouchers, normally about £260. Also gets you access to Thorpe Park, Chessington, Alton Towers, Lego Land Warwick Castle, London Eye, Madame Tussauds and some other stuff.

It's the best value thing I have ever bought.

There and many other places I've been I've never had an issue with a 50mm f1.4 at iso 3200. It's amazing though how many compacts have the flash going off all the time.

Yep, was annoying the hell out of me. Signs everywhere saying no flash and Mrs Joe public there with thier iphones and compacts with enough flash to light up the whole bloody room. Then they stand there wondering why they got a big white refelected mess as they look at the picture on the screen.

I got some decent ones, although havent processed them all yet. Was a mistake taking the 16-35 instead of the 24-70, as I could have really done with that extra stop. At ISO 6400 I was only getting 1/30 max.

Here are a few Ive processed.
