Rite ive changed this as no-one is replying. Basically i have a Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and the canon 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 II USM and am considering selling these two and buying a
Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC. Do you think its a good idea? If not can anyone recommend another good all purpose lens?

Yeah convenience it more helpful, but im not too worried about that. Can any one recommend any other lenses they have had good experiences with. doesn't nesseserely have to be that much zoom. I just would like a good walk about lens for now.

I have both the canon 18-55 and the 55-200 the same as you,but for walkabout I think they make a great combination and produce great quality pictures considering their price.
If you only want one lens and don't want to swap lenses then you will be pretty much stuck with a super zoom which will never be as good.
I have recently got myself two prime lenses and I love them,I pretty much never use my zooms now and they are my new walkabout babies

I have a 18-200 canon in the "for sale" if you are looking for that paticular length if thats any help :)

The Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS is a fantastic lens! I own it myself and bought it on the recommendation of Digital Photo magazine.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and read the magazine reviews yourself:

For the sake of what is practical though I would personally keep that 18-55mm as the Sigma 18-200 is not exactly all that light. Its quite handy when you want something light and don't need all of that zoom range. Quality can be lost in wide zoom ranges so you should'nt entirely rely on what you would refer to as an "all-purpose lens". But in my opinion, if you want the lens, buy it because you won't be dissapointed.

Thank all of you and thank you fabs. I havent really thought about a budget, and thanks voodoo. And RBHD can i ask what primes you got?
Thanks again
Gav

Cool thank you. Sounds like a good possibility then. Will have a look around :bonk:

I have got a 60mm f2.8 macro,and just picked up the sigma 30mm f1.4 this week.
The sigma at 30mm on a crop camera gives a very near 50mm equivalent to a full frame camera. They say that 50mm is a general purpose lens and although having only been out a few times I am in love with it already. It's perfect for shooting indoors without a flash and I can see way they say 50mm is general purpose now everything just seems to fall within the frame.
The main thing I love about the primes over my zooms is the shallow depth of field, even at f2.8 you can pick something out and blur the background wonderfully.
It's all food for thought I guess, and you have to weigh up the pros of convenience with a super zoom,vs better image quality with multiple zooms or primes.

A superzoom is always a compromise but great for walking and holidays when weight and convenience are more important than IQ
I have the Nikon 18-200 which I use when I am looking for versitility. I use nifty 50 or 17-55 when quality is more important- it's horses for courses
