Hi,

Just started an evening class at a local college last week.

They said, bring your camera and tripod next week because we'll be going out (night time photography I'm guessing) anyhow, the weather doesn't look to great for tonight I was just wondering how wet I dare get my camera.

I know the D5000 is entry level and Iv'e only used it before in very light rain, and then not for too long.

Does anyone have any experience of getting a D5000 a bit damp?

Cheers
Paul.

The D5000 certainly does not have weather proofing, so I'd be very cautious.

Was at a recent airshow, took my d90, but it rained quite a bit. Having been a boy scout, I was off course prepared, by using a plastic bag and elastics. Worked a treat

There are enclosures you can purchase, but if like me, you're only shooting in the rain now and again, the plastic bag route is very handy.

Btw, to ensure I didn't look a complete eejit, I did use a colour co-ordinated black bag :)

That was quick :)

Yep, I've just cut a nice hole in a big clear plastic bag, hopefully that'll do it.

Also if you have a tripod with a removable plate put a small hole in the bottom of the bag and scew in the plate. This will help to hold the bag in place and allow long exposures on a tripod with the bag staying secure.

Make sure you use a lens hood to help keep the rain of your front element too.

If you eyepiece round the viewfinder is removable you can put a hole ijn a bag for the lens fron (seals with elastic band). Remove the eyepiece and make a hole that can be put over the viewfinder - the replace the eyepiece to hold the plastic in place.

And as Paul said, tripod plate as well.

You then have a reasonably well sealed camera that you can still use fairly easily in a lot of weather. I find the heavy duty freezer bags work quite well for weatherproofing.

My D5000 is there to be used, it spends alot of time in the boot just incase. Unless its a downpour if I see something I want to shoot then I will. As Dr Pepper would say "Whats the worst that can happen".

freezer bag and rubber band around the lens and a lens hood should be ok in light rain........oh small hole for tripod mount...

Thanks for the replies, in the end one of the tutors was off sick so change of plan - studio shots!

At least I've now got a custom fitted plastic bag....:):):)
