Quick question. Is there an HSM model of the Sigma 50mm f2.8?

Cheers for the info.

What I really want is an affordable f2.8, auto focusing portrait lens that is bellow 70mm, Macro would just be a bonus.

I just go back to lusting after the 30mm f1.4 HSM! :D

Cheers Stuart

Why do you want a portrait lens shorter than 70mm, 30mm is too wide.

I want the 30mm because the second hand price is cheaper than the 50mm version! Probably for the reason you mention. I would be happy with either.

However as I'm working with a cropped frame camera so 30mm should do just fine. Some times I think it would be cheaper to upgrade my camera so I can buy the cheaper AFD lenes

Yeah, well that's the caveat with the 40's and 60's, great as a starter and if you go no further than pottering about it doesn't matter, but if you want to go further it can all really expensive for AF-S everything.

30mm on a crop is still too wide for portraits though..:)

Its probably a knee jerk from having my 70-200 as a main lens and finding my self walking backwards onto roads, train tracks and rivers trying to fit everything into the frame! :D

Might just get the 50mm f2.8 and manually focus but I've done it before and I get photos of bored looking people who are wondering what's taking him so long! :D

If you're happy manually focussing, why not look for a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4 AF lens?

There's always the Sigma 50mm f/1.4. Not my cup of tea on cropped-sensor however you may feel differently.

Is 50mm ok for portraits on crop (sony a300)?

Well, its really all about distortion and whether you're looking for classic portraits or an any head shot will do type shot.
Distortion varies between manufacturers, one 50 isn't the same as another, but they're all fairly decent on a crop, just the working distance can be a bit tight.
I mean, you can get really anal about it if you've a mind to, when someone specifically mentions "portraits", I automatically assume they're talking about classic, so that means no distortion, but "portrait" still encompasses even the wibbliest fisheyed gigantic nosed head shot..:)
