Quick Question on Evening Pics

when taking evening shots in city, how do you stop the lights from lamposts etc causing a flaring type effect.... I find it a bit off putting in some pics and would like to tone it down a bit.... how?

Don't think you can, but I read that the shorter the exposure the better, and to shoot while the sky has a little light left just before darkness falls.

Now wait for the flack off the experts...........

The other way is to get on the council and get the lights turned down..
