If you have back button focus enabled (AE lock/AF) the * will come up on Av/Tv/P modes. Disable back button and goes back to normal. Why it shows a * with back focus enabled? I don't have a clue.
When you enable back button AF you are basically separating the focus from the shutter button but at the same time you are (usually) putting AE Lock on the shutter button. Which is fine with me, I can meter off some foliage for example and then keep the shutter half pressed while tracking a bird using AF as necessary from the back button. Without AE Lock on the shutter button I'd need 2 thumbs or constant adjustment of exposure compensation depending on whether it's trees or open sky behind a bird. Or shoot manual but I digress
I think different camera models offer different combinations of AF / AE lock but the above is what people usually end up with.
