Having to use my 17-85mm IS USM kit lens for portraiture as my nifty fifty is busted, would you suggest that I turn IS off when taking portrait pictures with flashes or is it best to leave it on?

As per my other thread also, i'm looking to replace my niftyfifty but not sure whether to get the newer mkII version or is there any other lenses I should look at instead as a portrait lens?

It all depends on the shutter speed you are achieving if you need the IS, I guess 1/60 leave it on 1/125 there should be no need but that is only a guide, if you are using a tripod then turn it off, regarding the lens, which body is it going on, crop I guess, so the nifty 50 is a cool lens for the money, mk1 or mk2 picture wise you will never tell the difference yes the construction is different but unless you abuse your gear don't worry, are there better lens for sure, great reviews on the ef 85mm but maybe a bit to much on a crop and 4x the price! Hope that helps.
 
IS off/on with flash - on, unless on a tripod.

Nifty fifty replacement. Depends if 50mm is right for you for portraits - or do you want longer/shorter for your style?
 
I shoot around 1/160 - 1/200 I wasnt sure if having the IS on would affect image quality or anything.

Ok I think i'll look at getting a new 50mm I think thats my best bet for now and see how that goes, f/1.8 or f/1.4 version do you think?
 
Leave it off at those shutter speeds, 1.8 or 1.4 do you need the extra stop and the extra bokeh at 4 times the price, bearing in mind a lot of 1.4's seem to have soft issues wide open, not good for portraits :) cheers

+1. What harm will it do if you leave it on, other than drain the battery slightly more, which isn't exactly a big problem these days. I always leave my IS on as it's one less setting to worry about - I reckon there's a reasonable chance I'd forget to turn it back on if needed, esp when working quickly.

If your using a tripod switch IS off. I tested this and when on a tripod which is completely still, it tries to adjust the image positioning ( like it would if it was handheld ) hence loosing some focus.

If your using a flash aswell, have it off.
