Quick Sigma/Canon teleconverter compatibility question

Does anybody out there know from personal experience whether or not a Sigma 150-500mm f/5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM can be used with a Canon EF Extender 2x II?

We have a customer who has hired the Extender to use with his lens. But he says it doesn't seem to fit. (We were careful to point out to him that we didn't know whether it would fit, but he wasn't prepared to wait until I could get a definitive answer.)

I suspect that the rear element of the Sigma may not be recessed sufficiently to allow the Canon Extender to fit, in which case he's got no chance. Can anyone confirm whether or not that's the situation? Is there some other more subtle reason why it won't work? Or is he just doing something wrong?

Cheers.

It doesn't fit on my Sigma 300 2.8 due to what you said about the recession on the lens, so I would think it won't fit on many Sigma lens also AF would be lost. Think he would be better off with a Sigma extender which would only be MF.

Stewart, i cant find a pic of the rear of the 150-500 but if its the same as the sigma 70-200 2.8 it will not work with Canon extenders as they project too far out on the lens side, where the sigma lenses have glass in the way. The Sigma converters are much shorter in projection and dont interfere. Apparently both the 1.4 and 2x Sigma converters will work with this lens though !

From the Sigma site

APO Tele-Converter (Optional)
The addition of the (optional) 1.4x EX DG APO or 2x EX DG APO Tele Converters produce a 210-700mm F7-8.8 MF ultra-telephoto zoom lens or a 300-1000mm F10-12.6 MF ultra-telephoto zoom lens respectively. A removable tripod socket (TS-31) is included as a standard component.

Hi Stewart,

lots of info HERE, not sure if it will answer your question ( heading off to work right now so hadn't time to fully read through it ), but it might be handy for reference on other TC/lens compatibility.

Mike.
