Quicker Zoomed Loupe View?

Having just taken over 1000 images at Yeovilton Air day I now need to whittle them down. I normally start this by binning images of chopped off aircraft and obviously out of focus images. Then I go through the rest checking for sharpness at 1:1 zoom on Loupe View. The problem is the time it takes each image to load at this zoom. Now it may only take a second per image but with so many images that's a lot of time. I have loads of images to sort through from past shoots of different genres because of this issue.

So, what do I need to do to get my PC to load them quicker?

Ram is at full. Images are taken on my Canon 60D which is 18mp.

Does building previews on import help? The import will take longer but then you benefit when reviewing the pictures?
