I was playing indoor photos earlier today and the 40D sounds like a gun going off when its used indoors (its noisy enough outside just less obvious)! The 1D is a lot quieter and I was wondering which cameras are the quietest to use - do other models have quieter actions or are they all pretty much the same?

Just another one of my ramblings

Hi Suzie, Your 40D has a quiet mode on it!! at its highest setting its almost silent! although its not like you can just shoot away in that mode so not quite what you were asking!!

My Canon 400D sounds like a broken cowboy repeater rifle when shooting at an awesome 3fps :(

I must admit, Nikon cameras sound so much nicer

my d200 is just as loud when in machine gun mode yet still nobody knows Im about ...or...:suspect:

I'm already there with my D1X! lol Currently eyeing a D2Xs at mates rates pricing! hehe But the D700 or D3 is soooooooo tempting...damn that Edinburgh Gary! lol

Thanks all I'm glad its not just me that thinks they have a noisy camera!!

FITP, I have never seen a Leica in DSLR ;)

Fraggle, I thought that silent shooting on the 40D was only available if liveview was being used - just when I thought I knew most of the things I need to about the camera I find its back to the jolly old manual for me!

Dangermouse, I doubt anyone would switch to a different make for a quieter shutter, good try though

I've always thought the 40D had a quiet shutter compared to others I've owned including 1 Series. Same with the 50D.

On the 50D and 40D you have a choice of 2 quiet modes and they are very quiet indeed. Unfortunately you can only use them in Live View. Most of the noise actually comes from the shutter reset mechanism. To use these modes you press the shutter and it's super quiet. Great! The snag is you keep your finger depressed until you want to rewind the shutter, then release it so the shutter resets and the reset is quite a bit quieter. Then you're good to go again. A bit limiting in use.

Thanks Ally and CT, you have saved me looking up the manual tomorrow!

I don't use live view, it drove me nuts when I did try it as I like the picture to be taken when I press the button first time. My 1D is just less sharp in the sound so perhaps its just an illusion that its quieter.

Gman, just ask yourself do I need the D700 or D3, if you wait a year or so you can get one secondhand at a fraction of the price when everyone upgrades to whatever Nikon bring out to replace them. The shutter will still sound just as good!

Panasonic G1 (Micro 4/3rds) has no shutter to move to is virtually silent, and would make a good street cam / indoor cam.

They can be had with the kit lens for £400 - £500 and the 55-200mm (110 - 400mm equiv) is another £200 or so.

No no no no no!!! I am not buying another camera :nono: just a shame they cannot make virtually silent shutters on the one(s) I have got.
Perhaps I should write to the Canon people and suggest it for when they bring out the next upgrade, I'm sure they would take a lot of notice of me

Even though i've just made the move over to Nikon from Olympus, it's a camera i am watching with great interest for when i need to be quiet.

Makes me laugh this as I think of my Fuji s7000 where it was silent like a compact but had a "shutter type sound" you could turn on if you wanted it to sound "real"!! :D

Have you tried turning the noise reduction on :naughty:

wrap it in a pillow ;) that will sort it.

My wifes Leica Digilux 2 is completely silent. Produces some lovely pictures too.

Leica's the only way to go for silence.......

... The 1D Mark III also has a Silent single shot mode. The mirror only returns when you take your finger off the shutter, but it just makes the camera sound weird and it's not much quieter.

Nearly splurted coffee over my screen there - thanks, needed a good laugh this morning :D

Or was it a typo and you mean to write ****?
That reminds me. Did you hear about the guy who was an insomniac agnostic dyslexic?

(Wait for it....)
