Have just bought an R Strap from Flashman and am absolutely delighted with it. :woot:

I have just one question though. Has anyone here used it attached to a camera via the D ring of a QR plate. Was just wondering how secure it would be as it would be handy for just swapping over cameras without having to purchase separate R Strap connectors or when transferring to a tripod/monopod. I have googled it before anyone suggests doing that, but would like to know about TPers experiences.

i used it with a manfrotto qr plate for a while, i was always a bit weary of it though.

ive now wrapped some kata short straps from one of there shoulder straps round the lens between the tripod mount and the body and attach it that way.

I have some Chinese knock-off copies of the Manfrotto 200PL14 (RC2) plates and the D-rings are not well secured at all, indeed they can spring out of their holes simply when tightening up firmly. I have 100% confidence that the plates will operate as intended, but zero confidence in the D-rings as a method of support. The authentic Manfrotto plates might be fine in that regard, but that's not the use for which they were intended, or designed, and I personally would not take the risk. The ring is for tightening the plate, not taking a load that is bouncing around as you walk about.

Thats why i bottled out in the end!

The tripod socket isn't actually designed as a weight bearing system either so I use my Optech straps (without the Neoprene shoulder bit) as a safety loop system, so even if the D loop breaks, comes loose or something else the camera is protected against a big drop.

I've occasionally used the Manfrotto QR plate D rings for R-Strap connection without problems although I do tend to use the official R-Strap D Rings, they are smaller in the palm when using the vertical grip.

I see they are releasing the new Fasten-R3 soon. I wrote to ask about it as I was going to order some more R2's for my cameras and lenses. he replied and said they were starting deliveries from mid April over the next few months. I am not sure which one I prefer. The new R3 looks neat and has no weak points but it won't sit as flush as the R2.

I have only just started using the R-strap system, I had always carried my cameras from the over shoulder position since the year dot and this seems a logical progression to me. It certainly works well.

Paul.
