Right here we go,

I have run Jettec catrridges for years in my r220 and the results are very good. I use ilford galerie smooth pearl 90% of the time.

I now have an R1800 that i am running on Jettec inks aswell. I cannot for the life of me get decent colours out of the thing. I hope someone on here can give me some ideas to try, am at the end of my tether!

I have profiled my screen with my colormunki, have created maybe a dozen custom profiles of the printer/paper/ink combination and nothing creates colours anywhere near what i was expecting. The prints dont seem to carry any depth of color / saturation and are nowhere near on par with those from the r220.

I print from photoshop and have double and treble checked i am not double profiling or anything obvious.

Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated

I would guess your R220 used dye based ink, Jettec ink is sourced from a German company OCP. For dye ink based carts this was a good choice but now you are using Pigment based ink carts. It would be best to read a few reviews and find the best carts to use. I do know Image Specialists make excellent pigment ink.

You will never get as much colour saturation/depth using pigment inks.
On the plus side they last for years.

i cannot get decent ilford pearl or gloss prints using my non-epson ciss inks in an r1400. matt ilford pearl is spot on though. did the jetec inks work well on the same paper with your old printer?

Appreciate you guys taking time to reply!

Have been doing some research and been playing and am getting some better results now.

Re-installed print drivers, deleted all old crap profiles so can start from scratch.

Ilford site and jettec seem to suggest using the premium glossy photo settings in the print driver, but always got bad prints and it seems was probably overinking for the paper. Looking at the prints from 45 degree angle with a light behind the paper doesnt seem to have took in all of the ink.

Found something in a color management article on some random site said to check/try all of the settings, his particular printer/paper/ink combo worked best on a semi-gloss setting.

Tried the semi-gloss setting spent a couple of hours profiling and am pretty close now. Still not the depth of colours as the r220 but pretty close and more importantly a pretty good match for the colours on screen!

Thanks again :)

If it's any help with the ink usage, I believe the 'Photo Quality Glossy Film' setting lay's down about 10% less ink than the 'Premium Glossy' setting. This setting is recommended when using Olmec paper and I have used it with Ilford paper with no problem.
It may help with the 'Jettec and overinking problem)

How are you carrying out the profiling?

Hi David,

Have got a colormunki, so am using the software that comes with it to profile. This involves printing 2 test charts which after drying are scanned. This creates the starter profile.

What i have done since then is to optimise the profile. The software lets you specify an image then creates a suitable test chart utilising similar tones to the image you select. I used a headshot that had pretty much all skin tones. Seems to have worked ok for me :)
