My 550d is not weatherproof and I'm not wanting to spend a fortune on some gimmick that I could find an alternative to work around. At the same time I don't want to be using bin bags repeatedly. Any ideas on what's best to use? If I can cover the majority of the camera leaving the end of the lens free how safe is this really against rain? Would I not end up with pictures covered in rain spots? I don't intend to shoot a rain shot but I would like to know that if it did start raining how safe am I really without protection as opposed to using something cheap. Can't really find an answer on the net so thought it best to ask experienced peeps on here.
 
Thanks, I have a lens hood and never thought of screwing it onto a bag
 
I've got a couple of Optech rainsleeves for both the normal and with flash attached. They are basically shaped polythene bags but they are quite substantial. I've used the same one for about 5 or 6 times now and it's still as good as new. For the cost of them you can't really go wrong.
 
That could help but wouldn't stop water getting in at the battery/memory card doors, lens mount etc..
 
That reminds me of a clip I saw where some bloke covered his dslr in clear silicone (exact same stuff you'd put round a bath. It looked stupid and he tested it by strapping the camera to a bonnet of a car and driving into a car wash washing it 3 times. It worked perfect too after! I have looked on amazon and there are a few nice looking ones but I think this may be a project over time where I could hunt for material and attempt to make a bespoke version myself. Maybe we could attempt a competition to create one over a 12 month period and see what ideas come up? Mine may have spare pockets for batteries along with a pocket for my fags and lighter! Might even design a onesie and incorporate it into it lol
