Out and about tomorrow at a road race. Possible showers while I'm taking photos of the runners. How waterproof is the Nikon D7000 and the Nikkor AF-S DX 17-55mm lens?
 
probably be ok, but id bag it if you can, atleast that would keep the worst off
maybe a plastic small bag, put it over front of lens then put the hood on, and then tear away whats covering the lens

might be worth a go
 
Hi @mossienet I recently used the same combo at a rally and it was chucking it down. Rain didn't cause an issue but grit did.

Alot of people had their cameras covered with plastic bags. You look silly but it does what it says on the tin. Alot of other people had a fishing umbrella and set it in the ground and just shot from under that.

All above D7100 I think, her in doors just stopped me buying one of those!, the weather proofing bit was one of the reasons to upgrade.

1 AW. WaterPROOF down to 49' (15m?) and a high frame rate. Not a cheap option though!
 
Not only the camera body you have to think of, it's the lens too.
If it extends rather then internal zoom/focusing then you can get water inside
when you retract the lens
 
I seem to remember watching a video of a guy water testing his D7000 with 70-300 VR in a shower, yes a literal shower not precipitation :lol:

I'm never 100% trustworthy so I've always Used some cheap Optech covers, they've got a drawstring to go tight over the lens and a handy hole at the back for the viewfinder. They were only cheap and I've had them for ages, only cost £7-8 or so for 2 :)
 
pressed send too soon, i don't think they are waterproof but are certainly weather sealed
 
I'm not sure if Nikon are the same but Canon's take on water/weather 'proofing' can be summed up as -

The marketing department will do all they can to persuade you that the camera could be used underwater with no problems without actually making concrete claims.

The service department will look for any signs of water damage and tell you that it totally invalidates the warranty.
