Hey and thanks in advanced for any advice,
I regularly attend historic rallying events and for the first time i would like to take my camera along to get some shots of the cars. Sadly i only have the default 18 - 55mm VR lens and a D3000 camera but so have a Jessops 360afd flashgun as well.

These cars will be moving and will be on a stage, i will be able to get quite close to the action as the stage i am on has no restrictions on were you can stand.

Has anyone got any good advice for me ? and is flash usually used for this type of photography.

Thanks

If you get really close the 18-55 should suffice for the time being - I shot at rally gb with a 100-300 but found my 24-70 was on the camera most of the time because you get so close...... Flash is a difficult one - there become times in lower light when it can be used to good effect, but if you simply throw it on the camera in Auto mode it won't enhance the images at all.... Starting out id say use higher ISO before you go to flash.

18-55 will do just fine

Here are a couple of wide angle shots with low power flash - the drivers really don't bother about the flash in the day

One more flash isnt going to add much to the loads that other people will be firing off if it's getting dark. Overall im not a fan of flashes with rally photography mostly because they are just used on-camera and you end up with frozen wheels and very bright numberplates. Off-camera flash is another matter entirely though.

For normal rally photography I would suggest having a go at wider angles to catch more of the atmosphere of the event as well as tight crop shots of the cars.

There's a few of my favs from my rally set on flickr clicky!

whilst there May not be any restrictions please don't just assume that means its safe to go anywhere. outside of bends are a no no.
Your own safety is far more important than any photo.

I'm sure drivers would appreciate not having a flash going off in their eyes to spoil their vision!
You would be surprised alot of people seem to use flash.

I have followed many rallys over many years without my camera so i know alot about the danger side ect. I would never put my life in risk for a photo (y)
