How much RAM can a 32-bit programme use on a 64-bit Windows system - is it 4GB?

I have 8GB of RAM on a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit machine - everything runs well except one particular 32-bit programme (NX2) which stalls when loading large files.

Are we talking Capture NX2 or View NX2? From what I've read on other forums this is a bit of a problem with View NX2 on 64 bit machines, although it works fine on my 63bit W7 laptop.

Neither of the NX2 applications have been updated for 64bit so I think it's a bit hit and miss whether they work okay or not :-)

Capture NX2. It's hopeless with large edited files - one 60MB file from a D3x can take up to 3 minutes to open.

The problem is it's not a 64-bit application so it can't use more of the 8GB of RAM installed in this machine.
 
most 32bit programs are restricted to 2GB of RAM in windows.
Even 64 bit version are prone to this problem, excel for example can use 2gb per instance.
