It was the most up to date thing Canon had, oh hang on, another 5 mins has gone by, its obsolete now.
 
Small penis ring with a hotshoe mount? Just the job for freezing 'action' shots (if you can last longer than the flash duration).

Thanks to @Canon Bob for the identification. I've never used any of my 1D cameras tethered, so I guess that explains why these things were still sealed in little plastic bags. Incidentally the knob bit is surprisingly high quality. It's solid metal, quite heavy, and it is internally threaded so that you can attach... something else to it whilst in use. Not quite sure what though? Another cable strain relief widget?

Thanks to everyone else for the amusing suggestions. Except @DekHog. I'm trying to ignore that one!

Maybe I should rummage around in the drawer and see what else I can find.

Nope....it's threaded so that you can put the previously removed dust cap back on.
