Think this is the right forum for it...

I've had some issues with some s/w I bought recently mainly as it advertised the fact it could deal with RAW files, unfortunately it can't deal with mine lol.

I posted on the forum for some support and got the follwoing repsonse!

"Either use your Canon RAW processing software, or don't shoot RAW?

Unless you earn your rent and grocery money by selling photos, I suggest not bothering shooting RAW. For most (but not all) people who shoot RAW, "high quality" JPG (or TIFF if available) is more than sufficient.

Spend some time getting a better shot, and more shots, instead of spending hours sitting in front of the computer to process all those RAW shots.

That, and the RAW file format for your particular brand and model of camera might not be supported by any software in a few years, which leaves all those RAW photos... useless."

So RAW files according to a s.w house are now useless, could I be stupidly mistaken or are the alleged experts correct as it seems to contradict everything I've read on here! :bonk:

Sounds like a right load of old sloblock to me...

Which software have you been having problems with?

Whoever wrote that is a total idiot!

Personally, I use Adobe Camera Raw with Photoshop CS4, but I know that's an expensive option and not the easiest to get to grips with.

Looks like I'll have to fork out for PS, was trying it as a cheap alternative to PS as it states clearly on the box that it deals with RAW images...

Will try and take it back on Sunday as it does not fo what it says on the tin!

If you dont want to go to the expense of CS4, Adobe Elements will handle RAW files with Adobe Camera RAW, version 7 is available for around £40.00 and the later version 8 for around £59.00 (Amazon prices)

Canon DPP that came with your camera is probably the best and certainly the cheapest way of processing your RAW files, the latest version that came with my 7D is 3.7.1.1 you can download the latest versions from Canon.

I read in a thread somewhere here to convert to DNG using Adobe DNG Convertor for my Nikon NEF raw files, then I use CS2 to open the DNG files. Dont know if you managed to take your Serif back yet but you could try and see if your Serif supports DNG files? Just a thought.

Took it back to PC World today, there returns software is daft as I had to take my laptop in to prove it wasn't installed! Whats saying I didn't install it on my home PC lol...

I didin't but how were they to know!

I use Photo Plus X2 and am very pleased with it.

But I always use DPP to convert my Raw files to TIFFs then use Photo Plus X2 to edit them.

I've always found this works very well.

It occurs to me that you may have to download the RAW codecs from Canon for the program to work.

I tried loading a RAW file into X2 but it only seems to be all reddish.

Mind you I don't have the RAW codecs loaded either.

That was lucky of them to accept software returns. I cant say I've ever tried before but it's always in small print somewhere that it wont be accepted once opened, though its probably an exception if it doesn't do what it claims to!

I thinkit was accepted mainly down to exactly that, it states clearly on the box it supports RAW and as it doesn't techincially its misleading, not quite up to date on goods of sales act but sure I would have been covered if they didn't take it!

Was expecting an exchange only so some decent SD Cards but to get cash back was nice :)

Try Raw Therapee. It's a bit greedy on CPU resources so you need a fairly up to date PC, but it's updated pretty regularly for new camera models, and the best thing is it's free. :)

I have always used Serif as it's cheap and been great for editing JPEGs. I upgraded to an SLR and decided to shoot in RAW and the Serif PhotoPlus X3 returns lovely red images. After much emailing to tech support I was told that the Canon 500D was not supported and there were no upgrades planned to do this - great! I now use the RAW studio that can with the Canon - which is super, and then export file as something else (JPEG) if I want to do something other that the normal tweaks. Also I have used the DNG converter which then the Photoplus can understand, but I am not convinced that it is as good quality as it starts out. That may be just me though!
I was told to look at Gimp as an alternative, as I cannot afford Photoshop at the moment.

Am now using GIMP and it is a very good alernative to PS, very easy to use and the tips that are on here for PS also work pretty much identically with GIMP which is nice and handy :)

I bougth a Sony Alpha as my 1st camera and it ships with its own software that converst RAW automatically. It took me nearly a year of reading mags and threads, eveyone stating shoot raw , shoot raw!. I was at a complete loss. I finally set my camera to RAW went out for a couple of hours shooting anything and everything.
Got back, put the CF card in my p.c. and bingo it loaded up everything in both Sony and Photoshop no problems at all. Sony Image Data convertor did it all in one click.

I must agree with all Ive read, it was far better to manipulate colours and lighting. There is much more detail caught and much more can be brought it in processing. In another year Il have a go at HRD............. gulp! Just read another dozen mags to get my courage up. But the basisi of my story is I will shoot everything in RAW.

SJW I would use he Canon DPP that comes with your camera, or download the latest version 3.8 from their site, handles RAW well, then convert to JPEG if you want to load into Serif or whatever for further manipulation.

My mate has been having problems opens raw files in Photoshop cs3 from his Canon eos500d. Just says file is unsupported even after downlading and installing the relevent drivers and camera raw for photoshop any ideas? or ways around this problem?

Thanks

I've reverted back to using DPP for playing with RAW and GIMP for playing with Jpegs...

Support for the camera raw files produced by the eos500d (they're not all the same, despite having same file extension!) was only added to version 5.x of ACR (the raw converter "engine") Unfortunately, I think that cs3 is only compatible with version 4.x and below. Usual workaround is to run the raw files through Adobe's .DNG converter program which is kept up to date, and will produce files that CS3 can read.
