hi, when i wen on holiday to Tunisia i took every photo in raw(NEF). i wish i had taken all the snap shots in jpeg and then taken the arty shots in raw. now i have hundereds of photos that i need to convert to jpeg and was wonderin what FREE programs people where using to view/convert lots of raw files quickly. thanks, dan.

ViewNX free from Nikon will conver to JPG download from website. Also Nikon Transfer is helpful.

Other programs will let you edit the RAW before conversion (e.g. Nikon NX2 and Adobe Lightroom), but these cost.

P.S. check the box ViewNX should be on the CD supplied with the camera.

View NX2 is excellent and uses the same conversion technology as Capture NX2, but is free.

I have used UFRaw which is a free converter but I don't think the colours seem so good.

Faststone will do it, and is very fast, much better than ViewNX. It is very easy to tag/select your best photos from the thumbnails, and you can compare up to four side-by-side.

You can also do some basic editing such as cropping or exposure adjustments. If you need to do anything fancier either use View NX which I find slow and clunky but does the job, or the free Rawtherapee (for PC or Linux) which is fast but very powerful - I use it all the time for my NEFs once I have done the initial sorting in Faststone.

thanks, i have the nikon cd will have a look at it and also faststone sounds good, i want something where i can pick all the good photos and then the software will do everything else automatically, cant be bothered going through every photo editing each one, i have loads and they are mostly just snap shots. thanks, dan.
