My 16 GB card is full. What is the best way/programme to transfer the files over to a HDD drive? I don't want to convert all at once, I am working on editing so want to keep the originals until not needed. I have a trial of LR4 but it is not picking up my RAW files at all. Neither is DPP. could anyone plz help?

I'm not sure what platform you're on but I use Digikam which works on Linux, Windows and Mac-OSX. It is open source and free of charge and will automatically create folders (I use date folders) when you import. It also does all the usual stuff like tagging - the website blurb says:
With DigiKam you can :
  • import pictures
  • organize your collection
  • view items
  • edit and enhance
  • create (slideshows, calendar, print, ...)
  • share your creations (using social web services, email, your own web allery, ...)
You can download to the computer your RAW files without converting them and you can view thumbnails (and the larger embedded jpeg preview) of them.

I always bung my card into a card reader rather than connecting my camera to the PC.

Edit: Take a look at the Screenshots to get an idea.

Have you tried a camera raw update for your lightroom,i always use a card reader to transfer files to pc as it saves wasting the camera battery and is a lot quicker:)

This, and once the RAW files are on your computer, they aren't ever altered. You can open and convert and process the pictures any way you like. But you'll always have the RAW files (until you delete them).

The simplest way is just to use Windows Explorer and a card reader.

The pc sees the card reader as say drive D; you simply move the files on drive D (your pictures) to a the location you want on drive C

Card reader for me as well simple but effective. Why over complicate things.

What camera have you got? Lightroom is very good at recognising new raw files.
If you do import into lightroom it will ask you where you want to import, then you can keyword, add catalogues to assist finding them.

Thank you everyone. Yes I use. Card reader too. I have well over 700 pics ( my first mistake should have been editing and moving files more often) I started out shooting in jpegs so have about 300 jpegs which is being seen by LR bit not the other 400. I shall try this new programme and see if I can do anything. I did try to move from the card directly to a folder on my pc but that option failed.

Use EOS Utility to transfer the raw files to a folder on your PC (it came with the camera, if it didn't you can download it from Canon but you will need to do a simple registry fiddle to install it from scratch). Use the Import function in Lightroom to tell Lightroom where they are after you've transferred them to your hard drive. You must Import files to Lightroom, it won't find them itself.

(once you've transferred them, make a back-up, then check both copies, and then format the card in the camera - do not just delete them from the card, you should always format and always use the camera to format the card)

Ok the EOS utility is working perfectly. thank you!!!
I was using the import button in LR but it only imported the jpegs not the CR files.
I will reformat the card as been advised.

If you get EOS Utlity set-up correctly, every time you plug the camera in by USB it will offer to transfer the images to the folder you've specified. Give it the nod and it will then quietly go about its business. From that point onwards I use Lightroom for any moving or folder changes (ie. once you've gone round the clock with the file numbering) - it prevents Lightroom from losing file locations.

I always move a days shoot off the card straight away, even if its one photo, or I don't have time to look at them,
if you have a weeks worth of photos and the card breaks ....., or the dog eats it, or you sit on it ( happened to me :( [ sit not dog ]-- great stuff superglue ;) )

Thank you both, I have been able to trasfer all noiw and working on editing some of my favourites. thank you for the tip John!! It is scary just thikining aboiut it! I will from now onwards move all pics as soon as i'm done!

im also buying 4 or 5 cards, as Im going away for a fortnight, and will not have power or a PC !, laptop not an option , so if I have problems I won't lose to much, but I won't be able to review what I've done wrong and correct it.
I may just have to buy a portable generator:lol: , and a trailer to put it in.

If you won't have power don't forget loads of batteries for your camera - i found that 6 did about a week of serious use

I dont know what operating system your running but i found when i bought Canon 60d that RAW files wouldnt open with window 7 64bit, Microsoft did release a codec but it was for windows 7 32bit. And Canon had no plans to ever release a codec for windows 7 64bit users, Frustrated at this not being able to open files in windows picture viewer or or gallery i downloaded FastPictureViewer Codec 3.1 and now i can open all picture with windows 7 with no problems, One of the best £12 i ever spent.
