RAW Image thumbnail?

Hi,

I was wondering if there is a way to be able to display the thumbnail for a RAW image on Windows 7 in the same way that, for example JPEG thumbnails are displayed...so that they are easily viewable without having to open the raw file in photoshop just to view the image?

I have installed the Microsoft patch for this but the thumbnails do not change and the photos only open in Windows Live Gallery.

Regards

Will.

The best way is to view the images in Bridge.

Have it launch at start up and you'll be fine.

My RAW files show fine as previews too (.NEF - Nikon D90) in Win7 without any messing about. You just might need the relevant RAW converter installed..

I was able to view RAW as thumbnails at some point but I don't remember it being Windows 7,,, or maybe it was Windows7 but 32 bit.. I am sure you need to download a picture codec for this to work..

AFAIK there are no free raw thumbnail viewer codecs available for win 7 64 bit.

FastPictureViewer do one but it is not free and I see the price has gone up substantially

I just not sure what format canons use that's all

Maybe Nikon have updated the codec to support 64 bit now, because when I tried using it after upgrading to win7 64 bit about a year ago it deinitely did not work, I had to use FastPictureViewer. (not Fast Stone as I said originally.)

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I downloaded the codec but, as per my first post, the thumbnails still do not show, even if I change the program associated with the file type. If I then double-click the image, it opens full screen in Windows Live Photo Gallery but I just want to be able to see the thumbnails so I know which pictures they are (usually shoot in JPEG + RAW). The file type I'm having trouble with are .CR2 for my Canon 500d.

I'll have a look into bridge.....will this be on my disc for CS5? Or will I have to get it seperately?

Thanks again for the help!
Will.

There should be a free version of FastPictureViewer floating around online before it went commercial, should be able to find it if you search google.

canon do not do a codec yet for win 7 64-bit :( I am still waiting!
I have to use pse to view my RAW

Does windows 7 64 not have folders for 32 bit aswell so it will just install in there.

still giving you thumbnails

Update
Will sent me over a .CR2 file and i transferred into one of my picture folders and the thumbnail was there.
All i have installed is CS5 and the nef codec from nikon.

I have windows 7 64 ultimate running.

So i don't no what is needed then. As i have not installed any cannon software on this pc.

Just install the 32 bit codec from Canon or nikon and you should fine it will work correctly

Didn't need to do any of that. Just installed the codec and it worked.

This is really weird

Some program that you installed must have done the association with the 32 bit apps, at a guess.

I could not get the 32 bit codec to work, and after some research came across FastPictureViewer which was US$ 5.99 at the time. This works seamlessly with Win7 64 bit.

Still pretty poor of both Canon and Nikon not to provide 64 bit windows support after it being out for a number of years now. Almost all new systems come with 4G of memory and Win7 64 to utilise the memory.

But surely isn't that how windows works at a guess. Because of all the programs that get installed in the x86 folder and still work, just guessing here don't understand the full function of windows.
