Slowly but surely I am learning photography techniques and have had some successful shoots with friends newborns, parties etc. I have even had a friend get a recent photo of her newborn printed on canvas which made my day and also made me realise that I could actually do this, as I was surprised with the quality!! Anyway, next big step is, 'Do I shoot in RAW to produce better images?!' I am a bit worried about it to say the least, but I feel I need to step up! I currently have cs6 Photoshop.

On another note, I have tried to upload images in my gallery but they seem to be too big? I have no idea how to change this to enable me to share.

Thanks again in advance

this should help you with editing raw files, its a tutorial from adobe: http://www.adobe.com/digitalimag/tips/phs7rbrawbasics/movie_qt1.html

to resize a photo open it in Photoshop click image at the top and then image size, make sure its in pixels not cm or inch, you can change that to whatever you want, normal images on Flickr are normally 2048 on the longer side (if you change just the longer side it will change the shorter side for you so that it will keep the aspect ratio) also if you wish to print it off you may want to change the ppi to 300

RAW gives more potential for processing the images, especially if the colour balance or exposure was off. You certainly won't lose anything from jpegs other than a little time converting them.

Don’t know about canon but on my d90 I can and still do shoot raw and jpeg as a safety net, not needed the jpeg since shortly after starting to edit RAW but it is a comfort to have them

RAW isn't really enything to worry about, but, until you aren't worried anymore :D why not shoot RAW+JPEG and then you can play with the RAW but still have the JPEG to fall back on. It's a Win Win :D

Raw + jpeg just wastes space on your card. Shoot raw only - if you want a jpeg just open the raw file in FastStone (free image viewer) and select 'Save as...' to extract the embedded jpeg which is identical to the one the camera would have taken.

Isn't any embedded Jpeg of a low/basic quality?

And on some cameras if you shoot RAW+Jpeg, they only allow a low/basic quality Jpeg.

You normally get some software with a camera that will process the RAW files to produce a Jpeg. Some of the programs also allow some editing too to varying degrees. The Canon Digital Picture Professional program (DPP) which comes with the camera allows for editing, even if, imho, the interface isn't that intuitive.

With card capacity being what it is and prices being what they are I don't see RAW+Highest quality JPEG being a problem unless you're a machine gunner with just one card and you're out of touch with civilisation for a few months.

My Panny G1 with 8GB card allows over 400 RAW+Max quality JPEG's, my 5D with 8GB card gives 372. It's a non issue IMVHO. Personally I've never had a camera that couldn't take RAW+Max quality JPEG's, but I suppose there could be some out there.

I always shoot RAW but I also shoot a very small JPEG file just so I can tie the RAW to the Image without having to open it up to see what it is, but the Jpeg is really small, it's 720px on the longest edge and about 300kb so only takes up about as much space at 3 22mp RAW's

Not on recent, decent, cameras. The embedded jpegs from my 7D are identical to the jpegs the camera shoots. I can shoot raw+jpeg, extract the embedded jpeg from the raw, compare it with the separate jpeg and they are indistinguishable.

Really not sure what there is to be worried about when shooting in raw. You are just recording everything with raw, unlike jpeg that keeps only what it thinks it needs for the pic and throws the rest away. I would be more concerned with a jpeg getting something wrong and not being able to get it back if I needed too.
