Raynox DCR 250

Hi everyone...I am considering buying a Raynox DCR 250 Lens ( unfortunately funds won't allow for a MP-E65 ) and had planned on using it with my Canon 100mm f2.8, but reading the Raynox website they recommend using the lens with a zoom like a 80 - 300mm, so would my 70 - 200mm f4 be a better choice than my 100mm f2.8?

I know some of the Macro guys on here use the Raynox and achieve amazing results, so maybe one of them can answer this.

Hi Andy, The Raynox DCR 250 will work very well on your 100mm lens.

I use one sometimes with 105mm Micro Nikkor Lens.

When on a FF camera the scene width is 42mm down to 18mm with the lens racked out to 1-1.

When I use it on an APS-C camera the scene width is 27mm down to 11mm with the lens racked out to 1-1.

In each case this equates down to approx x2 magnification.

Got this with a 100mm + Raynox 150

Only advice would be to think carefully if you need the 250 - my 2p worth would be that unless you want to shoot really small stuff (ie well under 1cm) then the 150 will do the job and maybe easier to get the hang of.

Thanks Mike...firstly, what an amazing image!!

After seeing your above image I'm now thinking about buying both the 150 and 250, there are some Weevils in the garden that I want to photograph, but they're only about 4mm long ( see below pic taken with just the 100mm and is a bit of a crop ) and I think I would need the 250 to stand a chance of getting anything worth while.

Cheers - yes sounds sensible. I normally shoot stuff around 1cm or above so the 150 works fine for me but for 4mm the 250 will do the trick. To be honest you might find the 250 is all you need - for bigger stuff you can always go for the 100mm on its own so maybe stick to 'plan A' and get the 250 only

I have both the 150 and 250 which I might end up selling as I don't use. I only use my 100 MM. and extender now
