Hi everyone, ive finally saved up for the lens I was after (Canon 70-200 2.8 IS)

Im going to buy it secondhand as cant afford the new version

But were does everyone buy there lenses secondhand? Ive found a few on Ebay but is it worth risking getting them sent as you dont know what the conditions is going to be like when you receive it?

I have found a few on Ebay locally but the people selling them seem to end the auction early to sell out of ebay to avoid costs, so I end up not being able to bid.

Ive found some on gumtree but the sellers seem to always want to meet in a mutual location is this normal or something to be worried about?

Just wanted to see what everyone else does when it comes to buying expensive secondhand goods?

Also what would you say is the going rate for a good condition lens I was thinking between 950-1000?

Any help would be appretiated

many thanks Lewis:)

My preference is purchase from fellow TP members however there are criteria to meet before you can access the classifieds.

I am a big user of eBay (selling and buying) but I would be weary if parting with £1000 for an item. Even if you collected it from them and could check it out it could still go wrong shortly afterwards and you wouldn't really have any comeback on it.

I would look at used in a shop and pay the extra to reduce the risk of problems. (as long as the extra is not in the p taking area)

Shame will be too long until I can access the TP Classifield sections,

And thanks for the websites they both look really good but both don't have the IS version :(

I bought this very lens a couple of months ago used as I couldn't find it new
only the more expensive MK2
superb lens
try MBP they are always getting new stock

Others to try:-

Camtech
Mifsuds

All have good stock of used stuff, and all fine to deal with

Its 60days and 25 posts Ive only just joined unfortunately :(

I have noticed Digital Rev sell it for 919

But is it worth buying it from Honk Kong when I can get it secondhand for around that price Locally, Ive always been a bit worried about ordering from abroad

I would buy new from Digital Rev quite happily. In fact I just did. It takes a while to get here (around 10 days for my recent purchase) but I believe lenses are covered undered international warranty so no risk at all really.

Ok thanks just seems really cheap and too good to be true but seems like they are well trusted company, It would probably take me 10 days to find a decent local one on Ebay anyway:)

you will have no issues dealing with DR
and it's brand new with warranty for second hand money

try emailing panamoz to see if they can supply you one just because it's not listed on their site doesn't mean they can't supply you
worth a shot and could be cheaper
around 5 days delivery

I buy lots off eBay but have only ever bought one lens off eBay. I got it at Christmas and to look at and use it felt like new but I'm now in need of replacing said lens, I only paid £100 so it's not too bad but I'm sorry to say I would not buy a second hand lens again. Like has been said before it could (and did in my case) pack up and if you have paid a lot you may well end up out of pocket after have any repairs done.

Hi Lewis, and welcome to the forum. As far as your pricing goes, I sold a good condition 70-200 2.8 IS L MkI on here recently for £940 and it was a 2008 lens. If you have around that saved up already waiting to find the right lens then TBH I'd advise you to hold on a bit and carry on saving. You can get a brand new 70-200 2.8 IS L MkII from Panamoz, and if you pay by bank transfer and get a 5% discount, for £1352.80 at todays prices.

The MkI is very good, but the MkII is spectacular. Until I bought mine the other week I used to see what these guys said about the difference between the two and think it must be a right load of codswallop, but when I put it on my 5D3 and tried it out I was amazed at the difference. My MkI was a good copy, but to get that anywhere near as sharp as the MkII wide open I'd have to stop it down to f4.

I run a ebay store for a living so know how much it costs to sell on there. I sell everything on gumtree for free, as do a lot of people. This is always my first port of call. You can then go and see it and test it.

Keep your eye on the websites gumtree and pre loved, you can pick up some decent equipment on them both, just beware of scammers like any other site, if it seems too good to be true it probably is!
