Really fast broadband

Oh dear god! i thought 100mb was fast, and when i found out Virgin were trialing 1.5gb lines in london i was looking forward to the results but this is awesome!
 
As someone that lives only 5 miles from Coventry and 20 miles from Birmingham officially the second city of the England no matter what some in Manchester may believe yet I get a download speed of <2mb/second 0.3mb/second upload all I would like is something like say 15-20mb/second download and 5mb/second upload is that too much to ask, my Internet connect is more expensive than most and I cannot use virgin media or sky as they do not cover my postcode I personally like many that live in rural areas are fed up of being shafted over out Internet connection we are not asking for super fast connections but what most of us have now is a joke, I have 8 gig of files I need to backup from the weekend but I am going to do it at a friends house in a couple of days as using there connection in the town will take a couple of hours compared to the 2-3 days it will take at home

You can get that sort of speed of connection, it's called a permenant circuit (or "leased line"). It's a good deal more expensive than ADSL though. Also, the majority of home users do not want fast upload, at least not if it comes at the expense of their download speed.

ADSL is limited by the infrastructure, that is the length of the copper cable from your house to the exchange. It is the nature of the technology. VM's infrastructure is much more modern and uses coax, so does not suffer in the same way. Sky uses your phoneline as I understand will also be affected by line length. ADSL2 typically extracts more throughput from the same line, but the same problems of line length apply. Remember we are using a system developed around 100 years ago and the vast majority of the local loop is decades old.


Why are you transferring 8GB of data over the internet, from where to where? There's a good chance it's faster to burn it onto DVD and post it special delivery.

I have photos to back up to my remote online storage for really important photos I like to have photos on 2 external drives, 2 sets of DVD, and remote online storage ;)

I should add that part of my rant was the fact that the cities are getting ever faster speeds yet on the whole the villages are being ignored.

I live in a village, 2 miles from the exchange and get about 4Mbit.

I could get VM as they are in the road and the former owners used them, but while providing faster downloads their internet service does not meet my technical requirements.
 
hmmm, I only get about 2.5mb. I'd be happy getting 10mb!!
 
And in real life, how many ms will the average user save over a year if they get this super fast connection?

There speaks the person who only uses their web connection for surfing. BB speed is about ability to move data around, not web response times. If I had a fast BB connection (i.e. 100Mbit or above) I'd be using it to do off site backups, but then the ISPs would need to be truly unlimited (I could see myself doing many GB/month JUST on backups)
 
I've recently moved to South/West Wales, literally in the middle of nowhere on top of a hill.

I had Virgin 20Mb Fibre before we moved and I was expecting less that 1Mb here. Imagine my surprise when I found out I actually get around 6Mb

I'm as happy as a pig in **** considering where I live :)

I live in the middle of nowhere in a small village in Cornwall about as far away from the exchange as you can get - i can get

Upload is capped at 2mbps but for extra i could get 10mbps :p

Yup, an average user, I don't download movies or upload loads of large files - I keep 2 backups on external HDDs then copy folders to DVD for offsite storage. And, as you say, unlimited rarely is once fair use is called into play.

But that has nothing to do with the delivery of broadband to domestic users :thinking:

Forget cable of any flavour. The future is high speed wireless and is coming quite soon to many Western countries. Sadly, we will have a long wait due to the dinosaur that is BT wanting to retain it's investment in technology that is outdated before they complete trials.

1 Gbit/s for static installations! It's worth emigrating for :)
