I've heard some manufacturers have reputations for not being all that reliable, but I don't recall which ones to avoid. It was probably even the case that person A said brand X was a definite no-no, while person B said brand X was the most reliable ever

So what I'd like is a recommendation for two different 1TB USB external hard drives that aren't going to die on me in a few years. Budget is under £200 for the pair. Must have all the jazz that switches them off when the laptop is put to sleep etc. Cheers

I've had IBM, Samsung, Fujitsu, Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital. I don't think I've ever had a make of drive that's not failed. IBM's were horrendous.

I learnt my lesson, lost my data, so just double-up on all my drives now in RAID1 since storage is so cheap. Seagate's were usually my preferred choice on performance and cost, but there was something floating round recently about dodgy firmware on the drives so not really sure. My recent external WD drives have been OK so far.

Personally, I can't rate WD high enough - have 2 "mobile" drives - one is sat at home and backs up everything - all my servers and laptops etc plus music and pics, and the other drive, which is thrown in my laptop bag and carted around with me. I've dropped it a number of times and it still works...

Having said that I'll probably have one of them fail now :(
