Hi all.

My other half wants a new compact and I'd like to treat her.

Can anyone recommend one please.

For her it has to be small. I'd like it to have good image quality, decent noise handling, and have decent manual options as well as point and shoot simpleness :-)

Hoping someone can help :)
 
Depending on "how small" she actually wants it I would either recommend the G10 or G11 (depending on budget). They are fantastic cameras, and in many ways like image quality, functionality and manual options they are up here with DSLRs. The downside is that they are a bit larger.

If you need something slightly smaller, then the IXUS range, sounds like a reasonable buy. People have been very satisfied with those.
 
I have a Canon Pwershot A630 as a point and shoot. I have to say I've found it very good and picture quality is excellent. Has a flip round screen as well so its easier to see when using.
 
Maybe looking to get a P&S too, and from what I read the G11 is very good (although size is an issue) and the S90 seems very good too.
 
Bought myself a panasonic lx3 last year, great little camera not much zoom but the wide is good,must admit it peforms much better outdoors then in but that's what i got it for.
 
another very happy LX3 user here :thumbs:
full manual controls, shoots Raw if wanted, 2.5 fps (compared to S90 .9fps) :naughty:
plus HD video if that floats your boat :thinking:
 
Wow, I'm loving what I read about the s90. In fact I might buy one...

The LX3 looks rather like some of the old film compacts I've got.
 
Been very pleased with the initial shots from the Sony HX5V, ok doesn't have full manual control, but its a step up from a P&S, amazon £300. The panasonic TZ10 is the replacement to the front running P&S that is the TZ7, but the TZ10 now has manual capabilities.

The panasonic LX3 is a good camera, but very limited zoom capabilities 24-60mm even though it has a f2-2.8 lens. The Fuji F70 F80 or F200EXR camera's are also worth having a look at, especially for low light shots due to the new sensor way for capturing the image.

Really depends what you want to spend. The S90 the baby brother to the G11 and has the same sensor. When you start getting to the G11 prices though, your not far off a DSLR, G11 good, but not at that price tag.....
 
Well guys. After asking for advice I typically went and done my own thing. Sorry.

I got her the ixus 120 from Jessops for £200. I really needed something simple and this is straight forward enough. Plus it fits in her purse and is small enough to take out with her.

I looked at compacts with more advanced features but then I think she would have been put off by it and not used it.

Having had a quick play with it the IQ of the Ixus looks excellent and I think she's gonna love it. We're off to Greece it July for a wedding (which I'm shooting) and, in good light, I'm sure she'll get something that I can use too (well you never know :D)

Thanks for the advice though guys. I had a good look at the S90 but it was a bit more than I wanted to spend - and it was a bit more bulky (purse unfriendly!!).
 
Olympus XZ-1 is suppose to be at the end of compacts
