I keep dreaming of a new lens. The best lens I got is my 50mm 1.8 the other canon lenses I would like cost around £1000 so just wondering if there are options to short range lenses i.e. 24-40/18-30 in other makes.

It would be to fit my Canon 50D.

Thanks

Well, you could look at Sigma (18-50 f2.8 or 24-70 f2.8) or indeed Tamron (17-50 f2.8)

It all depends on what you shoot really, I have a Nikkor 17-55 f2.8 on my D300s and love it, as I did when I had my Sigma 18-50 f2.8.

Having said that, I do get this warm satisfying feeling every time I put my 35mm f1.8 prime back on :D

The for sale threads on here are a good place to look.

The best lens depends on what your budget is ?

Canon 18-55mm IS is reasonable, maybe a Sigma 17-70mm or Tamron 17-50 f2.8 ?

Thanks for quick responses.
I mainly shoot portraits and try my best to keep to natural light which is why the lenses get more expensive as I have been looking at lenses with around f2.5

I have the kit lens a Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro and my favourite 50mm 1.8 So I am looking for a lens with some zoom to fill the gap between the 1.8 and f4

I have been keeping an eye on the for sale forum here but not knowing which is the best option and what to look for I thought I better ask here for recommendations and then have a look for a nice used 2nd hand lens.

How would you rate the following?
Sigma
17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM

24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM

Tamron
SP AF 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di LD

I found the sigma 24-70mm softer and the colour rendition wasn't as good as the Tamron 17-55mm f2.8 or the 28-75mm. Personally i think the Tamron 28-75mm wont be wide enough on a crop sensor
