I have a Nikon D90. I have a Tokina 12-24 & a Nikon f/4 300mm prime. Both pin sharp. I'm looking for something sharp at around. 18/24 ish to 70/120 ish or anything else that is good with a higher range, or maybe a little lower. Must be sharp. Any recommendations?

Just got myself a 50mm F/1.8 AF-D Nikon prime lens for my D90, focuses in an instant, and is very sharp too! Inexpensive also :) I recommend it.

Seems that you may have mentioned a lens already.... Nikon 24-70

Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8.... think they're abut £1100 new/£950 used....generally classed as a bit of a benchmark in terms of performance. That focal length equates to (effective focal length) 36-105mm on your D90

Tamron does a much cheaper option, the 28-75mm f/2.8 - and Sigma does a 24-70mm also that get good reports

Nikon 28-70mm f2.8

It depends if you want to go FF in future really. If dx is good enough for what you need, I'd highly recommend the nikon 17-55 f/2.8. It's a fantastic lens, and comes in cheaper than the 24-70 (nikon). The sigma 24-70 as already mentioned is the cheapest of the lot, at least for the old model. The new one is silly expensive iirc. If you can stretch to it, the nikon 24-70 is frankly the best lens I've ever used, and certainly the most versatile.

Talk to alexisonfire about the 28-70. He's just bought one and absolutely loves it. Sharp, nice range and instant focusing (as with all afs lenses really). A bit long at the wide end though when on dx?

It'd help if we knew what your price ceiling is really. :)

Think a Nikon 18-70 would be pretty good if you're on a tight budget and couldn't afford anything faster

It depends on what your going to be shooting with it really.

For me I wanted a bit wider than 24mm for general purpose/walkabout stuff and went for the 17-55 f2.8. Lovely lens, amazingly sharp @f2.8 and not as heavy as it first seems. Can wholeheatedly recommend it if you want something a tad wider.

If you can afford it the 24-70 F2.8. If money is tight the old 18-70 kit lens is a sharp cheap lens.

Another vote here for the Nikkor 28-70. Probably the best lens I've ever owned.
the Beast, you just know it's quality when/if you can hold it !!
Can be found for as little as £650. (on here recently)

Again if you can afford it you cant fault the Nikon 24-70mm, although the Nikon 85mm 1.4D is pretty awesome lens as well but again very expensive.
If it was me on a crop sensor I would most likely go with the 17-55mm..

Cheers
Joel

Your choices are really the 17-50ish f2.8 zooms or the 24-70 f2.8 zooms.

With the former there's not much difference in peformance between the various non-Nikons and the real deal but with the latter there is a load of difference with the Nikon 24/28-70 being really one of the nicest bits of glass ever to grace a F-mount.

The only other one you could consider is the 17-35(ish) range. Probably not much use on a crop body though - these tend to shine because they are full frame lenses that fill the place of a wide zoom on FX/film. So, I'd not bother with that for DX.

Wouldnt the old 18-105 fit your range nicely, admittedly its a "kit" style lens not a shiny pro level thing but I'm sure it would take pretty pictures.

Nick.

When someone says "must be sharp", I'd tend to plonk for the higher end kit.

And please, don't start sticking up "sharp" 18-105 shots now...
