Hello all,

Right my friend is wanting a new camera, he mainly does car shows and motorsport events but is working with a tight budget of around £350. He would like an SLR with lenses but if not then another good non SLR that will shoot motorsport would be good.

Any help would be great

Many Thanks and happy christmas

rich, i've just sold a canon 20d for £175, a bit under going rate i know but was to a mate, add a 18-55 (ideal for inside of hairpins, car shows etc) and a 55-250, you've got a fair reach, and alot of people rate the 55-250 for a good extension to the kit lens if on a budget!

to be honest, for £350 for a motorsport (rallying or roundy roundy?) set up, he's going to have to look 2nd hand, there's plenty out there!

You'll get a reasonably good camera body for around £200-250, something like the 20D would be perfect, however, a lens for motorsport, that's the tough bit. You could do it in 2 bits, get the body now, and use the 3-4 months off season to save up for a decent lens, unfortunately, £100-150 ain't going to get you anything worth while.

The alternative is a bridge camera, and yes they do have the zoom range, but there autofocus performance isn't up to motion photography. Its all to do with the time it takes to focus and then take a shot, P&S or Bridge cameras are still not quick enough to capture motion.

My advice is have a look at ffordes, MPB, camtech, Park Cameras, Mifsuds, London Camera and look at something like a Canon 20D or Nikon 70Ds for around £200, hopefully might include the kit lens, that will get you taking photo's and save up abit more for a reasonable lens, bottom of the pile canon 70-300mm f4-5.6 USM IS (£300-400 new/used) or a sigma 120-400mm f4.5-5.6 (used/new £500/600).

As above really, the Canon 55-250 IS lens is a cracker of a lens and should be able to be got for £170-180 new (cheaper 2nd hand) and would be a great starter for motorsport, the Canon 70-300 IS is another very god lens, but could take all the budget.

Good luck with your search

alot of people when saying motorsport assume circuits where 400's ideal, 300 good, 200 too short, don't forget rallying chaps, 200's often too long, depending how you like to shoot, prefer inside of hairpin with 15-30 for me!

Thanks for that everyone

Think i will advise him to look at a bridge camera such as the Fuji

If thinking about a bridge camera he'll have to give it a thorough testing to make sure that it responds quickly enough to get the shots he needs...bridge cameras can be a lot slower to meter and focus. He could miss action shots...

Does he specifically want a new camera?

As said above, £350 would get a perfectly adequate used DSLR setup that would knock the socks off a new bridge.

I agree with everyone. Scout around for a used 20D. Bridge cameras are not for fast moving objects really
