recommend me a compact for daughter please

Hi

my 8 year old daughter has got £100 birthday money burning a hole in her pockets and says she wants a camera

what i'm after is something thats relatively simple to use and smallish in size also lithium ion battery is a must , i dont ever want to go down the AA route again , also to cost no more than £100

any ideas please ?
 
Why don't you want one with AA batteries? Two sets of rechargeables for a quid seems like the best thing for a kid's camera :shrug:

I had a samsung which ate batteries , i gave it her to use and it was ridiculous how often we had to change them , with flash we were getting about 20 or so shots , sometimes less before they were flat

maybe this is just a trait of this particular model , i dont know
 
Asda were doing the Sony DSC T70 at £79 but you would need to check your local store.

Gets good reviews.

The type/quality of batteries has a lot to do with it too. I've got a wee Nikon (a P50 I think) with poundshop rechargeables in it and they last for ages - great wee camera with VR and all sorts of aids too, don't know if you'd still get one under £100 though...
 
for basic camera stuff, I bought a FUJI for my g'f. 100 quid, lithium ion battery.
patronising menu system and internal lens so that it doesn't get battered.
not the greatest camera but decent for the job and comes in pretty colours :)
there are similar external Sony's which I'd also look at as a preference I'm not really a Fuji fan

it takes pretty good pics, battery lasts quite a while (get over 100 photos with flash on a night out) and if you want a replacement battery I got one for a fiver on the good ole ebay.

the face detection and smile settings are pretty good and accurate, colours not too bad, the only thing I find s the pics always swwm to be a little blurred on the lcd when you look back but are fine on the pc so maybe a design thing :$

also seem very pleased with it, again good battery life, compact and takes god pics.

is in the price range and has the face detection etc again good solid camera good pic.


not had any other firsthand looks at any new compacts but in the past have had fuji ones and never had a problem with them, good quality and pics so there is the below one about:

Got a Samsung P1000 for £80 from currys before the honeymoon and was really impressed with it.. wish I had taken the SLR though

We bought our daughter a Panasonic Compact (LS model) for school trips / parties etc (as DSLR too bid to take) and it allows fully automatic mode or the ability to alter the settings as required - depending on experiance and requirements.

Gives fantastic pictures (will also do video as well) and so far very pleased with it :thumbs:
 
FWIW I bought a Canon IXUS 70 for point-n-shoot - gets good reviews like the later models - however I personally think it's next to useless. It just never focuses on what you want and has a bad shutter lag. Colours are pretty washed-out, even more so with the flash. It's macro mode is pretty good though.

Then again I suppose it's not really fair to expect it to behave even remotely like the SLR.

I used the Ixus 70 for close to two years and I loved it. Plus its sleek and trendy. (always helps right? :D) Goes for about 70 quid on the canon outlet ebay store (refurbs). I know cos when mine broke after a year and a half of use, I bought it again from their ebay store :p
