Recommend me a flash unit

Hi

I'm after my first flash unit to replace the in-built one on my Nikon D80. Any recommondations ? Do I have to use a Nikon branded one ?

I've seen on the bay models such as Speedlight SB400, 600, 800 etc. Is this the type of thing I should be looking at.

Ps. Dont want to spend a fortune
 
What about the Nissin Di622 - it's fully compatible with your camera, but MUCH cheaper than the genuine Nikon ones. I've read a couple of reviews, but have no personal experience with them.

You don't have to buy a Nikon flash, several other companies make suitable ones, but many are no cheaper than the "real" deal....
 
as FITP has said, others are suitable, but to take full advantage of Nikons CLS, buy the real deal.

SB400, SB600, SB800, SB900

The best for performance vs cost is the SB600, i had one and loved it, but ive just upgraded to the SB800.

I guess now i'm on the look out for a secondhand SB-600 :)
