recommend me a good compact instead of the Canon G10

Hi, I've asked to recommend a good compact for a friends 70th birthady, the Canon G10 fits the brief perfectly, but I'm seeing quite a few reports of problems with dust inside the lens, & Canon charging £60 to clean it when necessary. Therefore I can't recommend the G10.

The brief,
small(ish, ie, not dslr size),
easy to use (well most cameras have full auto mode),
menu system not too difficult to follow (for a non techy person, that's another reson I liked the G10),
excellent IQ, good zoom range (landscapes & some macros (photographing butterflies),
Optical Image Stabilisation,
not too noisy at higher ISO's.
Oh, & not too expensive (was prepared to go to G10 prices)
Your opinions, help appreciated. :)

Hi Kevin.

Hope this helps - I was in a similar boat yesterday - here is the thread:

..and having spoken to someone else this morning, I have ordered my TZ7 a moment ago.

The other thing I hear about the G10 is the shoot button doesn't feel right, and it's like a brick in your hands. I am a big Canon fan, but not sure they've quite got the PAS cameras (at this level anyway) sorted as well as the competition.

I find the panny range was great for me

Iv had quite a few , and the FZ28 is the best yet .

Quality pics , lightweight , Fantastic Zoom range.

10/10 for me

TT

i really want a G10 but i keep reading reviews and now im not so sure.

i like the bulkiness of it and the top dials, it looks like a brick, which i like as im used to a gripped 30d and have rather large hands

My girlfriend recently bought a panasonic FZ28 and I have to say I am really impressed with it, in fact I am going to get one just to leave in the truck for the odd shot rather than lugging my kit around.

Panasonic do seem to have this section of the market well researched, and everyone I have spoken to who has a Pana seems to be very happy with it, and as you say Scraggs, it's easier to have something like this to hand rather than lugging DSLR kit around all the time.

I like my DSLR Canons, but I don't think they have researched this particular market, or deveopled it enough yet.

is there any other compacts that are of a similar chunky size as the g10 ?

Thanks to all replies, I've read the reveiws about the TZ7, impressive, tried one out this afternoon, liked it alot, still, would have prefered the layout of the G10, but until Canon sort out the dust issue, I'll be staying clear.
So that's one TZ7 heading this way :)

I'll have no more knocking of the g10... i researched this heavily and now have it.. it is the best compact hands down :)

But if you must go with something else... Remember there are always reported negatives about everything.

That statement just doesn't stack up. Canon are not market leaders for nothing.

I like Panos very much, I have an FX500. I also have a Canon G7. What dust problem?

Trying to be more helpful, there are only two compacts that seem able to excite enthusiasts ATM, and they are the G10 and Pano LX3 (or Leica D-Lux 4) but that fails your good zoom range need.

Check out that link from BoneyBoy for DPReview. They did several other very good group tests of compacts around the same time. As I recall, Canon and Panasonic came top in most of them.

Hoppy, I completely agree that Canon are market leaders in many sectors of imaging, including cameras, but I was referring specifically to the high end 'travel PAS' camera with the long zoom that people seem to be after as an 'in the pocket' replacement for lugging their trusty DSLR around.

I am a big Canon fan (and have been for some time) and was originally looking at the SX200 IS so as to stick with the brand I know and trust, but all the reviews, tests, and user/owner feedback points to the fact that whilst Canon's entries in this arena are good, some are very good, Panasonic however appear to have focused (no pun intended) on this market and seem to have got it right. They are considered by many at present to be the leaders in this particular market.

As long as I will be using DSLR's I will always be holding a Canon

what i dont get is that togs are buying SLR's to take photo's and now you buy a compact camera because you SLR is too heavy, didnt you figure that out when you handled it:shrug:

btw i would personally go for a panny, especially the tz7, fz28, and the lx3, these are probably the three most popular series in the era of digital cameras.

horses for courses..

1. Studio work and client work = DSLR every time
2. Family holiday + minimal baggage allowance + the impending "where are you going with that lot" and "don't think you're disapearing with your camera for the day" = PAS :|

Then your comment does stack up! Cheers for the explanation ;) :D

Can I just say that I got the TZ7 and it was a great purchase. Worked perfectly in Turkey for both images and keeping the family happy (see previous postings!!).

Whilst it is still Canon all the way for DSLR with me, I have to say that now I have the Pana TZ7 in my grubbly little paws, I am very impressed with their offering in this market.

Off to Snowdonia this week and will be taking both TZ7 and 40D.

I have a TZ6 and i love it as a compact. The TZ7 has HD vid and a few other bits that i don't want so the TZ6 does me just fine. Check out my Flickr pages (Link under my signature). All should be from the Panasonic TZ6.
