recommend me a monopod head please?

Hi

Just been given a manfrotto monopod, its a few years old but totally unused

Its in mint condition so im gonna give it a go

whats the best sort of head for a monopod ?

Any makes models anyone can recommend please ?

Budget, cheap as poss , still broke from xmas !!!!

Manfrotto do a monopod head - it's about £18 or £22 for the version with quick release plate.
& Calumet do an own label equivalent cheaper.

Red snapper do a mini ball head.
It's only listed with the monopod but I'm sure I read on here somewhere that they'll sell it separately for around £15.

I just found it a hopeless thing, awkward to adjust and never seemed to stay in position, I ended up sticking mine in a drawer, where it has remained ever since....

In all honesty it's probably not worth selling, for what I'd get back for it it's handier to have a spare qr plate.....

I use a Manfrotto 496RC2 Compact Ball Head, which cost a bit more than the monopod itself. I find the friction control very useful and it also uses the same qr plate as my tripod head (which of course is dependant on any tripod you have, but may be worth considering if you use a tripod as well)

I use one of these (not the quick release) and find it very easy to use, landscape and portrait.

Jessops sell one less than £10, Works with my 1D 100-400 Combo.

The Manfrotto 234RC2 tilt-head works very well with lightweight lenses. But anything heavier than a 100-400 or 70-200 f2.8 just ain't gonna work with it. For bigger lenses you'll need a good ball-head (and, IMO, a third hand) or a lot of cash for the Acratech Long Lens Head or the RRS High-Capacity Monopod Head.
