Recommend me an Accessory

Ok so in the UK you can now exchange your Tesco Clubcard tokens for Jessops vouchers (£5 in tokens gets you £10 in Jessops vouchers) so I'm considering what to get as my first accessory for my Nikon D3100.

The two main contenders at the moment are a Nikon 35mm 1.8 lens or the Nikon SB-400 speedlight.

I take a lot of pictures of the kids inside so either of these should increase my options but i'm after some advice as to what would be the better choice. Or indeed if there should be something else I should be considering.

I'll ask mine..........oh wait ;)

I'm actually saving up until I have £500 worth......long story. I live on my own but spend around £1000-1200 a quater at Tesco so hopefully won't be too many years.

do you use a Tesco Credit Card as you double up on points

shame they got rid of the Goldsmith, where £1 tesco voucher was £4 at Goldsmith, now only £3.

So with £150 Tesco Vouchers would hav got £600 Goldsmith Voucher for a very nice watch to keep for a long time ;-)

Be carelful your older ones don't expire.
 
back on topic. i loved my sb400 when I had mine, worked great in smaller indoor rooms. SB600 is class, but huge!

got to love the 35mm 1.8
 
I've extended all my vouchers, but that is a good point for others. Just checked at I have £189 worth at present.......making a 70-200mm F4 L £143plus voucvhers.....must resist!

I don't use a credit card, I just eat a ridiculous amount of (healthy) food (to maintain size), 7 meals a day believe it or not, so Tesco like me alot!

Do Jessops price match for an even better deal?
 
i had jessops price match an item to jacobs digitial before

i believe it must be in stock and a store in x miles distance

dude, if you got a credit card ( i just use mine and pay off balance in full each month), and you earn even more points, which means if you did that before you probably could get that lens for free ;-)
 
Yes I should look into getting a Tesco CC then, as you say just to abuse it for points.

Thanks for that. I think I'm leaning towards the lens rather than the speedlight at the minute, although someone else has mentioned that I might want to think about the 50mm 1.8?????

Try shooting at 35mm and 50mm on your kit lens and see which focal length is of more use to you, a lot of people buy the 50 seduced by the lower price and then realise that it's just a bit too long for general use on a crop body such as your D3100.
 
I bought both the 35mm and sb400 when I got my 3100..... hardly had the flash out of the box...... the lens gets far more use as there are far more occasions you can use the lens over how many times you need flash. (for me anyway)

I'm happy to use the 35mm and take a slight hit on the ISO than having to get the flash out of the box..... especially for impromptu snaps of my little girl.

Also, I find the 35mm just about right for in the house..... 50mm would be too cramped imho indoors.

Agree go with the 35mm lens.

Thanks for that. Someone mentioned the 50mm if I was going to be taking portraits of the kids. I do plan on some 'posed' shots but most of them will be as they're running around the house! I do tend to agree that 50mm would be a bit too long for indoors.

I suppose I can always use the kit lens for the posed shots.

Yep, walk a pace forward! ;)

There's a few shots on my flickr if you want to see the 35mm/3100 combo (i've created different sets for each lens)..... I can't vouch they are brilliant though as i'm only a beginner. :D

But i've been happy enough with some of them.

Thanks for that Zarch. I'm just a beginner as well, and i'd pretty happy to get some shots like those in your Flickr stream.
 
Just make sure the version of 50mm 1.8 you get is AF-S, as your D3100 doesn't have internal focus motor, it relies on the motor built in the lenses.
