I want one but not seriously been looking for one so I thought I would open a dedicated thread so I can get tailored responses, opinions and recommendations for an all purpose tripod and head

The wishlist is

1. Lightweight and fold-able so that I can strap it on the back of my backpack like the lowepro vertex 200
2. Tall enough to fit my height which is 6'3"
3. To use for manual focus lenses with an LCDVF as well as the autofocus stuff
4. Sturdy and solid
5. To take one my 5D mark 2 camera with some extra accessories when required.
6. Able to take a medium sized camera slider and keep it steady
7. Able to take landscape and portrait shots so head needs to be able to do that.
8. Be able to set up in different positions like the Benbo 1?

I guess this is an impossible list to fulfil, but any leads on any tripods that *may* fit the bill, please let me know.

I think the Benbo tripods are pretty unique. However, most tripods can have the legs at different heights/angles.

If your budget is tight I'd suggest RedSnapper tripod with Manfrotto head but if you want to buy right the first time a Gotzo tripod with Really Right Stuff head (and an L plate for your 5D so you can easily swap between landscape and portrait without having to reframe the shot.

Gitzo 2542 with Markins Q10 head should fit the bill apart from number 7

Manfrotto CXPRO4 would be a cheaper tripod option, but would still suggest you go for a good quality ball head and possibly an L bracket for the 5D

Thanks for your suggestions guys, please keep them coming. If you can please be specific with the model numbers etc, I can go and look into reviews, prices and images.

Really Right Stuff... hmmmm they seem to be on the expensive side. Which head were you suggesting?

Gitzo Traveller is as close as you'll get. Not cheap, but not RRS prices, and the RRS tripods are not of the compact folding design.

There are cheaper alternatives to the Gitzo Traveller, basically Chinese clones but very high quality. Check out Benro Travel Angel.

Is there anything that can do what a Benbo or Uniloc can? I think there are a couple of models out there but I really can't think who makes them. Another thing is stability. I find my Benbo when used upright is much more stable than my previous Manfrotto 055.

As for heads, ball heads are popular and I have one but I do find them frustrating as there's always that little drop just when you thought you had it nailed  Maybe a pan and tilt is a good all purpose option?
