Yes
So, just ordered a Sigma 24-70mm HSM and need to buy a mahoosive 82mm filter to protect the front element. Any recommendations for something cheap-ish but good quality? The Hoya Pro-1 UV is £39 at Amazon so I'll probably go with that, unless anyone has any other recommendations?

Thanks!

A filter is a must for me as I mainly use my camera for taking shots of my kids, who have a habit of trying to poke the glass whilst I'm taking shots!

If you are struck on getting a filter then the Hoya should be good enough, depending on the lens. It's worth spending a bit more on a filter as the cheap ones can degrade the IQ a lot. Some lenses seem to accept filters better than others and some like the Canon 100-400 L are downright awful with a filter on, I know this from experience.

I had spent around £200 on UV filters and after seeing what they did to the sharpness of my shots I removed them and only use them now if I'm out in the wet or somewhere really dusty like the beach. I bought mostly Hoya but there was other makes as well but I really don't like using them. I usually now just put the hood on the lens and it seems to keep fingers away from the lens as well as anything.

If you must, then Hoya HD has better coatings, easier to clean.

Errrm no, but they are often covered in jam/weetabix/snot etc - hence I am keen to keep them away from my shiny new lens I've just spent the best part of £600 on. Not that strange, surely?

Logically not strange no, but I think the point is why spend £600 on a lens to get a high level of quality to then put some more glass in front of it and potentially lower the quality.

A lens will not get damaged by weetabix, jam or snot and a clip round the ear will mean that only happens once anyway (it is still 1950 right?)

Never really seen the point of a UV filter as lens protection personally. It alway seems like a marketing scam to fleece a few more quid out of someone when they buy a lens. I find the lens cap that came with the lens offers adequate protection when I'm walking around. When the lens cap comes off and I start shooting, well, then I just take reasonable care of my stuff. As you said yourself this gear isn't cheap.

I'm aware of the potential for a filter to degrade the shots, and the filter would only be used when I'm in "the danger zone". Trust me, I'd rather have the filter on and have peace of mind than have marginally better family photos.

Also, the clip round the ear method in no way guarantees against repeat offending, not with my kids anyway!

not clipping them correctly maybe? Do they still do courses for that stuff?

FWIW I use Hoya Pro 1 digital UV filters. Might go against the grain of what's being said by others but I haven't noticed much of a difference when using them.
