Recommendations for decent Microfibre cloths?

Has anyone used a variety of microfibre cloths and can recommend one?

I wear glasses and generally use my shirt or t-shirt to clean them, which works fine, but when I can I use a cloth supplied in the glasses cases. These work much better.

My girlfriend just bought some very expensive sunglasses and the cloth that came with them, feels quite different to the standard cloths - it has a more pronounced weave and when I first saw it I thought it looked a bit cheap. It was a bit of a revelation. It's very very good at cleaning lenses. So much so that I looked at it more closely and could tell it was actualy very good quality.

So, can anyone who's used more than one type of cloth recommend one and/or suggest a supplier?

Go to Boots and pick up a couple of their spectacle-cleaning cloths. And while you're at it, get a box of their spectacle wipes - sachets containing an impregnated wipe that really does get glasses clean.

I use the cloths on lenses if they need dusting. On the rare occasions a lens surface needs a more thorough clean I use one of the wipes - gently :)

Speaking as a fellow glasses wearer I can't believe you clean yours with a shirt or t-shirt - but I am blind as a bat without my specs

I use one of these http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/softfibre-trek-towel-pocket-p195350 they are great for cleaning glasses etc but more to the point as a cloth to wipe the camera over if you get caught out with rain or spray they're brilliant. It's amazing how much moisture they can hold. The only down side is they are way to big for the job of cleaning glasses but for £7.20 you could get twenty or thirty small cloths out of it with the use of a pair scissors. This tip was passed to me Duncan Disorderly another forum member. Or you could just use it as a pocket size bath towel for traveling.

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions. I think I was a bit unclear before: I'm after something for cleaning camera lenses. My reference to cleaning my glasses was just to explain how I'd come to realise not all microfibre is created equal.

That said, I'll definitely try to stop using the shirt hem in future!

I don't clean my lenses...they have a UV filter on the second I open the box from new. But I wipe the filters wth Spudz when I'm out and about.

Poundland does them, 4 for a quid I think. They are more tea towel like in weave, but I use them for the iPad and they do they job as well as the conventional smoother microfibre cloth I got with my sunglasses. I use a Hama cleaning pen for lenses.

I spent 20 years in the Retail optic business, and have litterally cleaned hundreds of thousands of lenses

With out a doubt - Pentax cloths are the best

1. wash em in the washing machine
2. don't iron them
3, will last for decades
4. they do what you need them to do first time

If you want a wet lens cleaner, use:
- lint free tissue
- and Soloution 30 (in a spray can)
- spray the tissue
- wipe the lens
- dry off with clean tissue
- finish with pentax cloth

In the absence of solution 30 dab the tissue in water with washing up liquid in it, the rest of the instructions are the same

Sweet. Richard, that's exactly the sort of recommendation I was after. Thanks.

Yep, I use Poundland cloths too - for a quid or so more, Wilco's do a mixed pack of microfibre cloths that includes some finer weave 'glass cloths' - I keep a couple of these reserved for camera lenses. I almost never seem to need to wipe my lenses (except for on my bins) but I keep my camera lens cloth in a sealed bag to keep it grit and muck free. I bung used/mucky cloths in the washing machine. If I need to wet-wipe (so far only on the bins), I use a monitor cleaner which I understand to be a very mild residue-free detergent applied with the cloth followed by a short & gentle polish with a dry part of the cloth.

You can also get Pentax cloths in branches of Specsavers.

I use the ones I borrowed from my wife when she got a new pair of glasses. Went back to the opticians and they kindly gave me another cleaning cloth :)

I used to use 3M microfibre cloths but they're not all that great. It wipes alright but doesn't hold dust well, so my lenses end up with aggregated lint and dust which I have to blow off with compressed air.

I've resorted to using disposable wipes, specifically the zeiss lens wipes that you can get on ebay for a fiver or so. Those work very well, especially if you're on location and your only microfibre cloth is already dirty. Though, I have to say the replies in this thread have tempted me to get the pentax cloth myself.
