Next on my list of equipment to purchase, I think, may well be a macro set up. I do like those really detailed shots on here. I have a D90, 18-105 kit lens, a Sigma 10-20, and a 70-300 VR2 Nikkor, I have around £400 to spend. What would you recommend? Macro lens, teleconverters, or extension tubes? I believe I can't use TC's on the 70-300.

105mm Nikkor (the older one is non vr but around 300-400ukp - newer vr model should be the same) Micro

Raynox 250 (fits on your current lens) around 40ukp amazon.
I have the 105mm and its crisp - with extension tubs you can get very close.

There is a Sigma 180mm Macro in the classifieds at the moment for comfortably under your budget. I have one of these myself and bought it in preference to the Nikon 105 as I wanted the extra range. It's a magnificent lens. Very sharp and allows you to get very good close ups without scaring your subject.
The only disadvantage that I can see is its sheer size. It's too big for me to carry around with my other gear.

you need good lighting to get the best from any macro lens so you need to factor in the cost of a flash. The Sigma 105mm is a cracking lens and you should be able to pick one up used for £180-£200 ish.

Yes the Sigma 180mm is a good lens but its big - I've had one.... Best one I found was the Sigma 150mm 2.8 EX APO HSM which you can get from OSD (HK)for about £430 delivered - (I've had a couple of these & I recommend it highly) I've also had the Nikon 60mm AF-D which I sold as soon as I got it to go back to the Sigma 150mm for which I sold in order to down size (for the Nikon) then I regretted it & so brought another Signa 150mm ...
