Recommendations for nature camera

I'm looking to buy a camera suited to capturing animals in the garden and in bird boxes etc...similar to the type of thing you see on the one show every other week!

However the camera would be a present for someone and I have no idea about whats good or bad, and what's available.

The main thing I want is for it to be capable of capturing good quality stills and preferably video of wildlife during the night.

I guess the budget would be a maximum of £250, but wouldn't rule out a bit more if needed and there was a big difference in quality.

If anyone can provide any recommendations that would be brilliant.

Any DSLR would be capable of doing that, it's a telephoto lens you need to be thinking about more. £250 might just get you an old DSLR and cheap 70-300 second hand, but you wouldn't have video capability on an SLR older than about 2 years old. Alternatively you could look at a bridge camera for that money, not sure how good they would be for this application though. As for video at night, not sure how feasible that is without lights?
 
Sorry, I think I need to be clearer.

Ideally I would like a small camera (and small lighting kit) that could be placed in a birdbox, or set up outdoors to capture wildlife as and when it appeared without a photographer being present.

For animals in the garden at night, have you thought about a Bushnell Camera Trap - it is what the likes of Gordon Buchanan / Steve Backshall / the bug guy from The One Show use when they go off to remote parts of the world trying to see what wildlife is around.

Have a look here http://www.scottcountry.co.uk/about-us.asp, under the Wildlife Cameras tab. They're in Castle Douglas, about three miles from where we live. I used to buy some stuff from them when they still had their retail store, and I was sorry when they switched to online only, but they're good guys.

Most of these cameras shoot colour in good light and switch to infra red and monochrome at night. They're not all that expensive.
