Hi All,

Thinking of asking for a new tripod for Christmas. My current one is a Velbon Ultra Lux i F. I was given it and whilst it's fine, I'm looking for something lighter and easier to set up. Most of the time when I'm taking pics I'm walking up bloody big mountains, so the lighter the better. Also, it has the twist style extending legs rather than the clip style ones if you know what I mean. The twist style ones wreck my hands (yes I know I'm a wimp!!)

Looking to spend around £100 if anyone has any suggestions.

After having done a bit of research, what do people think about getting a monopod to give me the extra stability I need when hiking, and keeping the tripod I have when weight and time is less of an issue?

If you're looking for a lightweight tripod that's good and stable, you're going to be looking at a carbon fibre one, but they don't really come that cheap...

I can only really speak from my own experience, but I have a Manfrotto 055XPROB with a 492 ball head. While it's not THAT lightweight, it's not really that heavy either - but at least it IS solid.

You might also want to look into the RedSnapper tripods - some people on here swear by them... http://www.redsnapperuk.com/
