Recording on a SKY box

Does anyone know if you can get the programmes recorded on a SKY box off the box onto another form of digital media - flash drive or external HD?

My Father has a SKY box and lots of channels I don't. I could ask him to record the stuff I want then go round there to download it?

Anyone tried this??

last i heard sky uses a propriatary format

edit - not quite right, it is possible (debatable legality) to grab free to air recordings if you pull the hard disk out. however paid for channel recordings are encrypted.

Surely you could connect the scart to another recorder and playback the programme ... assuming SKY has scart?
 
The box you are recording the programme on to is a decoding box. As soon as you copy the recording on to some other media then you lose the ability to decode it.

If you subscribe to a Sky channel and record a programme then cancel your subcription to that channel you won't be able to watch it on the same box because you can no longer decode it.

Yes have done it and it worked fine ..... i copied a program from sky+ box to my hard drive/dvd recorder, then copied it on to a dvd ,just to see if it was possible ...
 
To be honest, I'm surprised this thread has been allowed to remain considering it is effectively advising on how to commit theft/piracy :eek:
 
As others have said, it is possible to copy onto a recoding device (DVD/HDD/VHS) attached to the sky box via scart or HDMI.

There is even a function in the sky planner to do it - on an HD box select all the programmes you want, press the green button and then follow the instructions. Similar functionality on a non-HD box but not sure if it's still the green button - it says COPY.

However some broadcasts are copy protected (using HDCP on the HD box and probably Macrovision on a non-HD box) and these will not normally record on the target device.

You also have to still be subscribed to the channel in order to get the programme to play on the Sky box. That's irrespective of whether you are using the copy function or not.

Is it? As I said, my old Sky+ box had the facility to copy recorded programs to video. As long as you're not distributing the media then I don't think there is an issue.
