A friend of mine has a sd card that gone corrupt and windows won't read it at all, he thinks it because it's been removed without closing it properly and safely removing it,

I had the same thing happen to some time ago and I managed to source some software and recovery them so I know it can be done, but unfortunately it was on my old pc and I can't remember what it was called.

Is there any software out there that someone could recommend, it would be nice if it's free, but not essential as the photos are more important.

I used recuva after seeing it recommended on here. Not only did it recover the files I needed, it brought back some stuff I'd forgotten I'd taken and had deleted ages ago.

There's a few free ones that I've seen and used in the past. Recuva seems to be about the best, but there's also Image Recall , Power Data Recovery, Image Recall 5 (needs a reg no. but is offered on cardds and other small items), Digital Rescue 4 and then there's one for USB drives called Flash Drive Recovery for anything deleted off them. Hope this helps anyone in a sticky situation in the future.
