Recovering lost data from usb stick help.

Just a quick one really. I want to install SanDisk rescue Pro on my imac [one of our karate squad has managed to delete her entire A-Level course work so going to have a go at recovering it], but it comes on one of those mini cd things, so really don't want to go shoving it the slot loader unless someone with better knowledge than me tells me it will work and not get jammed. Otherwise, do I need to copy entire thing to a full size disc or usb stick instead?
 
You will jam the drive if you pop it in, so see if you can download it or copy it to alternate media :)

Nowadays when you buy a Sandisk card, you no longer get the cd, but a code to download it, so you should be able to get it on t'internet.

I've always chucked my codes away, since I've already got it on several discs, but maybe someone has a code you can use... :D

I've a copy of rescue pro on a mini disk and can play it on my external cd/dvd drive. If all else fails let me know and I'll copy it to a full size CD for you
 
DO NOT PUT IN A MINI DISK INTO YOUR IMAC!! If you still value your iMac that is. It might be the last time you use the drive. Vertical slot loaders were never designed for mini discs.
 
Ok chaps, need some ideas. I installed the recovery program on my windows laptop instead. Ran it and it founf lots of stuff. However, on checking the data its recovered, its merely a duplicate of what was there anyway.

basically, she deleted an entire folder of A-Level course work from an Emtec USB stick plugged into an XP machine, just by having it highlighted and hitting the delete button. It didnt go to the recycle bin, it just vanished. I have run the sandisk recovery software, to no avail. Anyone got an more ideas? Also, should I have deleted the whole thing before running recovery, as all its seems to have done is dupplicated what was still present. I have copied all existing files/folders to an HD anyway.

A desperate 17yr old would be very grateful for any help or ideas ;)
 
Poor thing - must be gutting for him/her to lose all their A-level work.:(

I can't offer a solution I'm afraid - except to mention that Darren (Cowasaki) has some pro-level recovery software iirc, and I'm sure he'd be happy to help out if he can...

Best of luck getting the data back. :thumbs:
 
Yeah, especially as she has already had to redo TWICE because of a muppet teacher, which is another story. Oh yes, and its meant to be in for tomorrow :bonk: I have left her starting it all again, its going to be a very long night, but if I can find a way of getting back sooner, it would be a huge help and yes, she has had a good talking to from both her mum and me about about backing up stuff to computerHD as well as on the stick! Lesson learnt the hard way. :(


I have done some goggling and there is plenty of other software out there, but no idea what is good and what isn't and so far can't find anything about any successfully recovering stuff from these particular drives.
 
That is a very harsh way to learn the lesson indeed. :shake: I do feel for her.

Long shot, but is there any possibility of contacting her tutor/college and asking for a 24hr extension due to exceptional circumstances? :shrug: Be harsh to get a lower grade because she now has to "rush" it. I guess this could be very hard on a Sunday unless you have any personal contacts though...?

ok, I downloaded this onto my lappy, and ran it on my own usb stick and it worked very well indeed, so I have mailed it over to her to have a go with, nothing to lose [well, not any more ;) ]

Will update once I know. Meanwhile, if anyone else has any ideas, very welcome.


Oh yes, and I DID NOT load a mini disc into my slot loader, I asked here first and was told not to so stop arguing chaps :lol:

Should also mention that you should not save anything else to the usb stick until you have recovered what you want, or you run the risk of not being able to recover the files you want.
 
ok this is a long shot

As long as you haven't set Windows to bypass the recycle bin altogether they should be in a hidden folder on the USB stick called Recycled or Recycler

What you need to do is open Windows Explorer > Tools >Folder Options and check show hidden files and folders and uncheck hide system files (can't remember which one un hides it) so then you should be able to restore them

Give this a try

Am I right in that this only works if the USB stick is plugged into the computer where the files were deleted? This is probably why you couldn't see the files in the recycle bin - because they were on the drive itself.

Sorry, it's been a while since I've used Windoze, so I might be wrong.

Tried that already on friday night when she first called in a panic about it but nada :( My first thought was they had become hidden files somewhere but Thanks anyway.


...and apparently, the recovery program mentioned above hasn't worked either.

Typical bloody windows, no matter how hard you try and delete something, there is always a trace of it, until you actually want there to be a trace and its succeeded in so completely wiping it, MI5 need to be called in to find it again. Anyway, she is busy rewriting everything and luckily the images she was using within the docs were backed up else where, so thats something I suppose.

you cant blame MS for over zealous use of the delete key ;)

im surprised recovery software hasnt worked to be honest as long as the key was not written to then it should still be there.. :(
 
:bonk: I know, thats what I think too, but I am not sitting at her computer, or rather I certainly wasn't when the delete key was struck.....

Not to worry, she has learnt a tough lesson....better now I suppose than in a couple of years time with a degree dissertation almost complete and ready to go [yes, I know someone that formatted a drive before backing it up, because they had no idea what 'format' meant] :cuckoo:
